- 12/23/2001 As Compiled by The San Jose Mercury Eight Monterey Bay League players garner postseason honors as members of the 2001 All-San Jose Mercury Football Team.
- 12/22/2001 As Compiled by Cal-Hi Sports Two local players garner All-State honors from the prestigious Cal-Hi sports publication. Congratulations to Palma's Elliot Vallejo for making the overall All-State team, and to Pacific Grove's Phil Shin for making the medium school All-State team! Only two other player were selected to represent the CCS - Trent Edwards of Los Gatos and Adam Tafralis of Mills. Mitty's Robert Perry and Oak Grove's Mike Rodriguez were named to the All-State underclassmen second team.
- 12/12/2001 As Compiled by Cal-Hi Sports All three local CCS football champions make the final Cal-Hi Sports state rankings. Palma ends the season ranked #9 overall in the state, and #4 in NorCal. Salinas cracks the rankings at #17 in the state in Division 2. Pacific Grove ends up ranked #10 in the state in Division 3. Additionally, Hollister ends up ranked #20 in the state in Division 2.
- 12/5/2001 WEEK 13 NOTES The Central Coast Section consists of 11 leagues that participate in football. These 11 CCS football leagues are comprised of 86 different high school football teams, ranging in location from San Francisco in the north to King City in the south. Only 4 of the CCS's 86 football teams take home championship divisional trophies each year. In a banner year for local high school football, 3 of those titles now reside in Monterey County.

- 11/29/2001 4 local teams playing for CCS titles High school football doesn't get any better than this - the CCS football championships. Four local teams will compete for sectional titles in three different divisions this weekend, all hoping for a spot in the CCS football history books.
- 11/27/2001 WEEK 12 NOTES Four local football teams will be rewarded with CCS championship game appearences after advancing unscathed through last week's semifinals. Palma will face Mitty in the D1 finals. Mitty is currently ranked #10 overall in the state. Salinas will face Hollister again in an all-MBL CCS D2 final. - 11/8/2001 RIVALRY WEEK CONCLUDES REGULAR SEASON Local gridiron rivalries dominate the landscape in this last week of regular season 2001 football. Carmel travels to Pacific Grove to play in the most significant "shoe" game since the Jimmy Carter administration. Defending CCS champions Palma and Hollister square off in what has become the area's most intense rivalry. King City and Gonzales battle for South County bragging rights.

We went to the Central Coast Section's web site (www.cifcs.org) to check the rules and attempt to de-mystify this seemingly complex process.

- 10/31/2001 As Compiled by The San Jose Mercury The Salinas Cowboys suprisingly drop out of the Mercury Top 15 despite posting a win last week. Alvarez drops to #7 with loss to Palma.
- 10/30/2001 WEEK 8 NOTES It was billed by local media as the game of the year, with local sportswriters and television personalities openly suggesting the end of a dynasty. But in the end it was Palma adding another big-game victory to its storied legacy, pummeling Alvarez 42-7 in front of a standing-room only crowd and gaining the inside track to another Monterey Bay League title. The Chieftains have to win just 1 of their 2 remaining regular season games to wrap up an ongoing state-record 18th straight league title.
- 10/25/2001 MBL TITLE ON THE LINE Two of the top-ranked teams in the CCS square off in a game that will likely determine the Monterey Bay League title. Palma comes into the game ranked #8 overall in Northern California by Cal-Hi sports, and #2 in the CCS by the San Jose Mercury. Alvarez comes in ranked #5 in the CCS.

- 10/4/2001 GILROY AT HOLLISTER LOOMS LARGE Only one game this week features two teams with winning records, and it is a big one. Gilroy travels to Hollister in a rivalry game that has early playoff implications. A loss by Hollister(3-1) may sink any Baler D1 playoff hopes. Gilroy (4-0) faces its first real test of the season after defeating league teams with a combined 1-8 record.

- 9/28/2001 MTAL LOOKS TO BE A 3 TEAM RACE Pacific Grove returns key skill position players and seasoned leadership, and Soledad returns practically its entire squad from last year. But no program in the MTAL has been as consistent from the freshman level to varsity as Seaside, a dark horse pick for the title. With their recent success, the Spartans have limited the number of players who, in the past, have ended up wearing the green and gold of the zip code next door.
- 9/26/2001 MTAL BEGINS LEAGUE PLAY MTAL league play begins with an opening game that pits undefeated Carmel against league title contender Soledad. Alvarez hosts an important MBL game Saturday against Live Oak, a team the Eagles have never defeated.

- 9/24/2001 WEEK THREE NOTES To say the atmosphere was electric would be an understatement. As their Salinas Cowboys rumbled in from the legendary south tunnel entrance to "the Pit" for pre-game warm-ups, thousands of Salinas fans, rabidly waving purple towels, let out a roar that could be heard down the entire Salinas Valley.

- 9/14/2001 MBL BEGINS LEAGUE PLAY The Monterey Bay League begins league play this week, with Saturday's Hollister at Alvarez game standing out on the schedule. The Mission Trail League continues its preseason tour of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, with five inter-league contests on tap. Of particular MTAL interest is the Gunderson of San Jose at Soledad game Friday night. A win by Soleded will solidify their legitimacy as contender for the MTAL title.
- 9/14/2001 HOLLISTER AND PALMA AGAIN LOOK LIKE EARLY FAVORITES It will be difficult for the Monterey Bay League to top last year's outstanding season that resulted in five section playoff berths and two Central Coast Section Football Championships, including its first CCS Division 1 crown in 12 years. But many key players return to a league that has arguably become the top football league in the CCS.

San Lorenzo Valley pops up at #10 in the state in Division III with their win over North Salinas. With their rout of Alhambra, Palma becomes a team "on the bubble" in the rankings for Northern California.
- 9/11/2001 WEEK ONE NOTES It was a very predictable Week One of football for Monterey Bay League
contenders. Hollister, Palma, Gilroy and Salinas all won by large margins in
their season openers. Carmel saw its fourteen game losing streak come to an end.
Alisal extended its losing streak to 32 games, falling in an agonizingly close
game 15-14 on a 4th quarter field goal
- 9/7/2001 AREA TEAMS KICK OFF SEASON All area teams kick off the 2001 football season, with high school action taking place up and down the Central Coast. Live Oak is the lone exception, previously losing 26-0 in Week 0 to Mitty. The marquee game appears to be Friday's Pacific Grove/Salinas game at "The Pit". Both teams are out to make early season statements that they are contenders in their respective Mission Trail and Monterey Bay Leagues.
- 9/3/2001 As Compiled By Cal-Hi Sports Cal-Hi Sports, the statewide sports authority, has released its preseason state football rankings by division and region. Suprisingly, Hollister High is the only local team ranked at this time, currently occupying the overall #10 spot in Northern California.
