Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On January 13, 2011 the Scotts Valley Falcons traveled to the Aptos High Mariners to play on their field. The weather was foggy and the field conditions were excellent. The Mariners entered the game with an overall season record of 6 wins and 3 losses. Aptos SCCAL record was 0 wins and 2 losses.

The game started with both teams being aggressive and physical. The Mariners scored quickly in the 6th minute when they were given a free kick from approximately 30 yards out on the left side of the field. The shot lofted up and over the Falcon goalkeepers outstretched arms and into the right upper part of the goal for a perfect undefensable goal. The Falcons mobilized their attack and worked for a corner kick in the 26th minute. Junior Taylor Rohde took the corner kick and put the ball in the front of the goal where junior captain Emily Payne headed the loose ball into the Mariner net. The first half had both teams going back and forth with their possession. The first half ended with the Falcons putting 5 shots on goal while the Mariners had 3 shots on goal. The first half ended with the score being tied, Falcons 1 to Mariners 1.

The second half was equally exciting and action filled. The Falcons generated several scoring threats but were unable to put the shots in the net. In the 66th minute the Mariners put together an attack on the Falcons goal when the Aptos player settled the ball and fired a shot from 15 yards away up and over the Falcon goalkeeper and in the back of the net for a score. The Falcon ladies tried desperately to mount counter attacks and scoring opportunities but the Mariners held their composure and kept the ball out of their goal. The second half had the Mariners with 3 more shots on goal while the Falcons added 3 more shots on goal. The game ended with the score being Mariners 2 to Falcons 1.

Sophomore Emily Johnson had a hard fought game with 4 saves as the Falcon goalkeeper. The Falcon defense played well most of the game and kept the speedy Mariner ladies from getting very many scoring opportunities. The Falcon defense was led by senior captain Aly Bothman, junior captain Kalynn Morano, freshman Megan Keating, sophomore Rachel DuBridge and sophomore Kacey Lilly.

The Falcon midfielders had a pretty good game trying to control the middle, building a relentless attack and getting back on the Mariner counter attacks. The Falcon midfielders were led by Emily Payne, sophomore Madison Black, junior Kathryn Balch, junior Jessica Romeo, junior Ranae Maloney and freshman Lena Gustafsson.

The Falcon forwards had a good day mounting a relentless attack up the wings. The Falcon forwards were led by junior captain Jordin Carlson, senior captain Keara McCullough, Taylor Rohde and sophomore Olivia Gonzalez.

The Falcons will rebound from this minor setback and come back from the adversity stronger and better than ever. The young Falcon ladies can be proud of their effort and come out fighting in their next game. The SCCAL is a very balanced league this year with strong individual talent and good competitive teams.
