On February 27, 2010 the #1 seeded Scotts Valley Falcons played the #9 seeded Saratoga Falcons at Valley Christian High School in San Jose. The Central Coast Section (CCS) Division III Quarterfinal game was played in cloudy weather and good field conditions. The Saratoga Falcons entered the game with a season record of 8 wins, 9 losses and 4 ties after beating the #8 seeded Santa Catalina team 2 to 0 in the 1st round of the playoffs. Saratoga had a record of 7 wins, 1 loss and 4 ties in their league while scoring 25 goals this season and allowing 28 goals. The first half was played with the intensity of a playoff game. The Scotts Valley team was determined to score in the first half but the Saratoga players kept them out of their net. The first half had the Scotts Valley Falcons with 4 shots on goal while the Saratoga Falcons had 1 shot on goal. The half ended with the score being 0 to 0. The second half was played with both teams trying to mount an attack but neither team could deliver a goal. The second half had the Scotts Valley team with 1 shot on goal while the Saratoga team had 1 shot on goal. The regulation time ended with the score being, Scotts Valley 0 to Saratoga 0. The playoff rules allowed two overtime periods of 10 minutes each. Both overtime periods ended up with no shots on goal. The overtimes ended with the score still deadlocked at 0 to 0. The next phase of the playoff game was the penalty kick shootout involving at least 5 players from each team shooting a penalty kick. Saratoga started the shootout with a shot high and wide right for a miss. The next four Saratoga players buried their shots into the net for a score. The Scotts Valley Falcons had five shooters including Jordin Carlson, Brittany Kuo, Amy McDowell, Madison Black and Emily Johnson. Each Scotts Valley shooter nailed their shots for a goal. The Scotts Valley team won the shootout 5 to 4 in penalty kicks. The Scotts Valley Falcons earned the right to advance to the CCS Division III Semi-Finals. The Scotts Valley defense once again held to an impressive string of shutouts. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Johnson had another strong game where she registered 2 saves and her 16th shutout in 20 games this season. Emily Johnson has now played 1488 minutes in goal, allowed 4 goals, saved 60 shots on goal and has a Goals Allowed Average (GAA) of .215 per game in 20 games. The Scotts Valley defensive backfield had another stellar performance while stopping the Saratoga attack most of the game. The defense held the physical Saratoga offense to a minimal 2 shots on goal. The defense was led by senior captain Brittany Kuo, senior Kelsey Baskovich, sophomore Kalynn Morano and freshman Kacey Lilly. The Scotts Valley midfielders played with heart on both the defensive and offensive end of the ball. The midfielders were led by senior captain Kailey Payne, freshman Madison Black, senior Amy McDowell, junior Aly Bothman, senior Michelle Hunter and junior Keara McCullough. The forwards made consistent runs and pressured the Saratoga defense most of the game. The forwards were led by sophomore Emily Payne, sophomore Jordin Carlson and sophomore Jaemi Mansfield. The Scotts Valley Falcons played as a team and overcame a determined Saratoga Falcons team. Scotts Valley will advance to the CCS Division III Semi-Finals on Wednesday, March 3, 7PM at Valley Christian High School in San Jose. Scotts Valley will be playing the #4 seeded Sacred Heart Prep Gators from Atherton. Sacred Heart Prep will be entering the game with a season record of 14 wins, 4 losses and 3 ties. Sacred Heart Prep has scored 62 goals this season and allowed 24 goals. Sacred Heart Prep beat the Harbor Pirates 2 to 0 in their CCS Division III Quarterfinal match. Scotts Valley now has a record of 14 wins, 2 losses and 4 ties for the season.
