On February 6, 2010 the Scotts Valley Falcons played the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars at San Lorenzo Valley High School. The weather was cloudy, dry and the field conditions were good. The Cougars entered the game with a season record of 7 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie. The Cougars record in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) was 2 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. The Cougars were focused and well prepared for the game with the Falcons. The first half started with both teams trying to control the tempo of the game and generate their attack. The Falcons scored in the 14th minute when Brittany Kuo was given a corner kick and placed the ball perfectly to where Jordin Carlson headed the ball into the Cougars net. The first half had the Falcons with 6 shots on goal while the Cougars had 1 shot on goal. The score at half time was, Scotts Valley 1 to San Lorenzo Valley 0. The second half started with the Falcons trying to control the ball up the field. The Falcons scored in the 45th minute when Kailey Payne took a throw in approximately 25 yards out from the goal and placed it into the box where Jordin Carlson headed the ball into the Cougars net. San Lorenzo Valley played tough and kept the ball out of their net for the rest of the half. The second half had the Falcons with 5 shots on goal while the Cougars had 0 shots on goal. The game ended with the score, Scotts Valley 2 to San Lorenzo Valley 0. The Falcon defense once again dominated towards stopping the Cougar attack. The Falcon defense has been the heart of the team towards being reliable and dependable every game. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Johnson had a good game with 1 save and the shutout. Emily Johnson has now played 1158 minutes in goal, only allowed 4 goals, has a .276 Goals Allowed Average (GAA), 46 saves and 12 shutouts for the season. The defensive backfield was led by senior captain Brittany Kuo, senior Kelsey Baskovich, junior captain Aly Bothman, sophomore Kalynn Morano and freshman Kacey Lilly. The defense has only allowed this season, 48 opponents shots and recorded 12 shutouts in 16 games. The Falcon midfielders played strong and never quit for a minute. The midfielders gamesmanship and tenacity competed with every ball. The Falcon midfield was led by senior captain Kailey Payne, sophomore captain Jordin Carlson, senior Amy McDowell, freshman Madison Black, junior Keara McCullough, sophomore Jaemi Mansfield, sophomore Ranae Maloney and sophomore Kathryn Balch. The Falcon forwards had a great game with constant pressure on the Cougar defense. The forwards were led by sophomore Emily Payne, senior Michelle Hunter, sophomore Taylor Rohde and senior Riley McFall. The Falcon offense has so far put 182 shots on their opponents goal this season while scoring 42 times. The Falcons continue to overcome several players injuries and adversity. The young Falcons have skilled senior leadership and a talented group of underclassmen. The Falcons are made up of 6 seniors, 3 juniors, 8 sophomores and 3 freshmen. The lady Falcons are playing with true heart and pride while battling as a team every minute of the game. The Falcons now have a season record of 12 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties for a .813 winning percentage. The Falcons are still on the top of the SCCAL with a record of 8 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie. The Falcons continue to play as winners and never quit. |
