New State Rankings

They were No. 3 in the state in the preseason, but were tied in
their first game. Another wild game on October 5 resulted in a
three-point loss. But once the Santa Margarita High football team of
Rancho Santa Margarita started playing fellow Catholic schools it's
been a series of impressive performances. The latest came last Friday
at the Santa Ana Bowl as the Eagles stormed past Mater Dei of Santa
Ana, 33-19, and put themselves in line to win their second straight
Serra League title.

Junior standout Ashton White followed up a 283-yard outing against St. John
Bosco of Bellflower with another sizzler against Mater Dei: 33 carries for 212
yards and two touchdowns. Santa Margarita quarterback Marshall Tharpe added a
pair of touchdown passes, one covering 42 yards to Brandon Clark and one of 33
yards to Renny Jackson.
Combined with a victory two weeks ago over Loyola of Angeles (which was
nationally ranked at the time), the Eagles have now moved back up to No. 13 in
this week's state top 20. The tie against Ayala and the loss to Tustin has hurt
the team in the rankings, but in the big picture Santa Margarita is still in
line to do all that it was possibly forecast to do in the preseason. Of course,
last year's team also was flying high after a victory over Mater Dei only to
stumble in a first-round CIF Southern Section Div. I playoff game to A.B. Miller
of Fontana. It is therefore no surprise that many Div. I followers in Southern
California will not be convinced of Santa Margarita's strength until it wins a
playoff game.
Despite the loss, Mater Dei remained in the top 20. The Monarchs were helped in
that regard by Bishop Amat of La Puente, a team they beat, which defeated
Loyola, 20-14, behind Donnie McCleskey's 22 carries for 150 yards and three
touchdowns. Three of Mater Dei's four losses are to unbeaten teams and the
fourth also is to a team the Monarchs are ranked behind.
The only other new team in this week's top 20 besides Bishop Amat is Palma of
Salinas. The Chieftains are defending CIF Central Coast Section Div. I champions
and have a powerful group of linemen, led by 6-8, 300-pound Rene Vallejo.
State and national No. 1 De La Salle of Concord won its 121st consecutive game
by dominating Ygnacio Valley of Concord, 31-13. Two late fourth quarter
touchdowns against non-starters made the score respectable for Ygnacio Valley.
In a game De La Salle led 31-0 midway through the third quarter, big plays were
the story as Maurice Drew scored on a 55-yard run, Nate Kenion scored on a
65-yard punt return and Alijah Bradley scored on a 68-yard run. The Spartans
face Deer Valley of Antioch this week and will likely complete their 12th
straight unbeaten regular season.

Notes & Highlights
No. 2 Long Beach Poly went to work in the final 16 minutes of a game against
Long Beach Jordan after Jordan cut the lead to 27-20. The Jackrabbits wound up
winning comfortably, 41-20, thanks to the running of Hershel Dennis and Rory
Carrington. Dennis had a seven-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter and
finished with 20 carries for 208 yards and three TDs. Carrington had a 14-yard
run later in the fourth quarter and ended with 15 carries for 119 yards. Jordan
entered the game at 6-1 and was No. 19 in the Cal-Hi Sports statewide top 20.
Poly closes its regular season Friday against Long Beach Millikan.......No. 6
Clovis (Calif.) won its eighth straight after a season-opening loss to
nationally-ranked Tulsa Union (Okla.) with a 28-6 victory over Buchanan. The
Cougars meet arch-rival Clovis West this week, which was hoping to be on a roll,
too, but stumbled in a 24-22 loss to Central of Fresno........
