3 By
The Numbers
|
31 |
Gonzales
(15) and Watsonville (16) have combined for
31
rushing touchdowns, which is one rushing touchdown less than
their combined pass attempts (32). |
29 |
It
was a tough week to be a quarterback, as local signal callers
threw 29
interceptions over the weekend. |
16 |
Entering
week three of the season, 16
of 26 teams have a sub .500 overall record. Perennial CCS
title contenders SLV and Palma are a combined 1-5. |
13 |
The
Gonzales defense has allowed an area-best 13
points this season in three games. The North Monterey County
defense is second best in the area, having allowed only 28
points. |
6 |
After
completing the first two weeks of the season without a kick
return for a score, area players returned 6
punts and kickoffs for touchdowns in week three. Leading the
pack was Gilroy's Robert Daluz, who returned two punts (45 and
82 yards) for touchdowns in a 30-6 victory over San Lorenzo
Valley. |
2 |
Local
papers were split over who to put at #1 after Palma's 14-7
loss to Serra. The Salinas Californian kept Palma at #1, while
the Monterey County Herald moved Seaside into the #1 spot.
Palma's two losses were at the hands of the #1 and #12 ranked
teams in Northern California (Cal-Hi), and sport a combined
record of 6-0. Seaside opponents have a combined record of 2-8.
Watsonville opponents have a combined record of 4-4-1. Both
are quality teams and deserving of recognition, hence our
decision. Seaside and Watsonville face stiffer tests this week: the
Spartans host Hollister, and Watsonville travels to SLV in an
attempt to break the Cougar's 46 game SCCAL unbeaten streak. |
1 |
The
West Catholic Athletic League is widely regarded as the top
football league in Northern California. The WCAL just
completed an impressive 21-4 preseason vs. non-league
opponents, with two of the losses coming at the hands of
defending national champion De la Salle. Salinas became the 1st
southern CCS team to pin a loss on the WCAL this season with a
21-14 victory over Mitty. The overall southern CCS record this
preseason vs. the WCAL is a dismal 1-6. |
