Week 1 Notes and
Key Stats
|
There
has been a lot of discussion on the mbaypreps.com message
board concerning which league is superior in the Monterey Bay
Area. Two leagues in our area are now designated by the
Central Coast Section as A leagues: the Tri-County
Athletic League and the Santa Cruz County Athletic League. The
Monterey Bay League and Mission Trail League are designated as
B leagues. What does all this have to do with the postseason?
Here is the CCS playoff formula, as documented on the CCS web
site (www.cifcs.org).
- Multiply
the number of wins by 2.
- Multiply
the number of ties by 1.
- Multiply
the number of games against 'A' League teams by 1.
- Multiply
the number of games against 'B' League teams by
0.5.
- Multiply
the number of games against a League Champion by
1*.
- Award
2.5* points for being an 'A' League Champion.
- Award
2.0* points for being a 'B' League Champion.
- Award
1.5* points for being a 'C' League Champion.
- "Independent"
schools within the Central Coast Section will be
classified as "B's."
- Opponents
from outside the Central Coast Section will be
classified as follows: "A" if
they have 8 or more wins; "B" if
they have 4 - 7 wins; "C" if they
have less than 4 wins.
|
Throughout the season we'll track how
the Monterey Bay Area leagues stack up to each other and to
the rest of the section.

Week 1 By
The Numbers
|
312 |
Watsonville
running back Shawn Benjamin set a Santa Cruz
County record with an eye-popping 312 yards rushing and
6 touchdowns on just 12 carries in a 69-22 victory over
Woodside. Benjamin had touchdown runs of 36, 65, 43,
51, 51 and 28 yards. Benjamin is averaging 26 yards per
carry. Wildcat Efren Lomeli rushed for 141 yards
and 2 touchdowns on 12 carries. Watsonville rushed for a team
total of 594 yards. |
312 |
Carmel
quarterback Pat Johnston had a career day
against Harbor, throwing for 312
yards and 2 touchdowns in a 49 point first half. |
170 |
What
a difference a year can make. On their way to a first-ever
T-CAL title and CCS D I semifinal appearance, Salinas averaged
327 yards of offense per game, second only to San Lorenzo
Valley. In their season opening loss to Seaside, the Cowboys
were held to just 170
total yards. |
207 |
Watsonville
and Woodside combined for 22 penalties and a staggering 207
penalty yards last Friday night - 120 penalty yards alone for
Watsonville. One wonders what the score would have been if the
Catz had minimized their penalties? |
66 |
The
Monte Vista Christian defense limited King City to 66
yards of total offense, 42 of which came on a single
completion to King City receiver Ben Plaskett.
Taking that completion away, King City was held to 24 yards in
34 plays by MVC. |
54 |
Even
more impressive was the Scotts Valley's defense limiting
Stevenson to 54 total yards of offense, holding the
Pirates to just 20 yards rushing on 29 attempts (.68 yards per
carry). Both teams combined for only 191 yards of offense in
the defensive struggle. |
21 |
Monterey
extended its CCS-leading losing streak to 21 games,
suffering a hard-fought 14-7 loss to Aptos. With the game
turning only on a late Mariner interception return, it looks
like the Toreadors will be working on their first winning
streak in 2+ seasons in the very near future. |
13 |
Talk
about a bevy of running backs - 13 different players
carried the ball for Palma in a 48-9 victory over Alisal. |
4 |
Last
season San Lorenzo Valley only turned the ball over 22 times
on their way to a CCS Division IV title. The Cougars turned
the ball over 4
times in a 40-19 loss to North Salinas - their first regular
season loss since 2000. |
