Friday's Games

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

Watsonville High

Last Year

San Lorenzo Valley extended its SCCAL unbeaten streak to 34 games after surviving a 13-7 scare from Watsonville. A 48 yard touchdown run by San Lorenzo Valley running back Loren Jensen with just 2:27 remaining in the game broke a 7-7 deadlock.

Key Stats

San Lorenzo Valley

  • #1 in the quad-league area in points allowed (62)
  • Offense #2 in the quad-league area in passing yardage (1429 yards)
  • Offense #2 overall in the quad-league area with 3038 yards from scrimmage
  • -3 turnover ratio

Rankings

Streaks

  • 45 game SCCAL unbeaten streak
  • 7th straight SCCAL league championship
  • 9 game winning streak

Watsonville

  • #1 in the quad-league area in points scored (389)
  • Offense #1 in the quad-league area in rushing yardage (2756 yards)
  • Offense last in the quad-league area in passing yardage (120 yards)
  • Defense #2 in the quad league area in passing yards allowed (435)
  • +14 turnover ratio

Rankings

Streaks

  • 3 consecutive games with 40+ points
  • 3 game winning streak

Notes

San Lorenzo Valley is guaranteed at least a tie for a 7th consecutive SCCAL title. A Watsonville victory would force an SCCAL Tri-championship with SLV, Aptos and Watsonville. A Watsonville loss would seriously jeopardize any Wildcat bid for an at-large CCS playoff berth.

Live Oak (0-8-1) At Gilroy (1-8)

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

Gilroy High

Last Year

Leading 36-8 midway through the third quarter, Gilroy survived a furious Live Oak rally to hang on for a 36-35 victory. Gilroy thwarted a late Live Oak a 2-point conversion to preserve a one-point lead.

Key Stats

Live Oak

  • #24 in the quad-league area in points scored (103)
  • #21  in the quad-league area in points allowed (221)
  • Offense #6 in the quad-league area in passing yardage (1049 yards)
  • Defense #12 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (2375)
  • -16 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 13 game winless streak (1 tie)

Gilroy

  • #26 in the quad-league area in points scored (86)
  • #24  in the quad-league area in points allowed (255)
  • Defense #26 in the quad-league area in rushing yards allowed  (2179)
  • Defense #9 in the quad-league area in passing  yards allowed  (726)
  • Defense #25 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (2905)
  • -13 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 7 game losing streak

Notes

Both squads hope to end the season on a positive note.

Hollister (4-4-1) At Palma (8-1)

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

Salinas Sports Complex

Last Year

Going back 5 years, Palma's overall record ( including playoffs) is 58-5-1. Four of those losses have now been inflicted by the Hollister Haybalers. A capacity homecoming crowd at Hollister High was treated to another classic Baler/Chieftain hard hitting, run oriented defensive battle that has come to typify MBL football. The Hollister defense limited Palma to a season-low 171 yards of total offense. Each team mounted one quality scoring drive in the first half - Hollister's resulted in a Marc Montalvo field goal, Palma's resulted in a Luis Amaral 1 yard touchdown run.  Palma went into halftime with a 7-3 lead. Palma fumbled the ball on the second half opening kickoff, giving Hollister the ball on the Palma 25 yard line. Four plays later, Trenton Young ran 10 yards for a score and a Baler 10-7 lead. There would be no further scoring in the game. Palma mounted one final drive late in the 4th quarter, but an apparent game-winning touchdown pass was called back on a holding penalty.

Key Stats

Hollister

  • #15 in the quad-league area in points scored (154)
  • #12  in the quad-league area in points allowed (174)
  • Offense #7 in the quad-league area in rushing yardage (1732 yards)
  • Defense #15 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (1581)
  • Defense #15 in the quad league area in total  yards allowed (2430)
  • +- 0 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 2 game losing streak
  • 3 game winning streak vs. Palma
  •  8 year consecutive playoff appearance streak in jeopardy

Palma

  • #5 in the quad-league area in points scored (220)
  • #7  in the quad-league area in points allowed (107)
  • Offense #2 in the quad-league area in rushing yardage (2258 yards)
  • Offense #24 in the quad-league area in passing yardage (359 yards)

  • Defense #8 in the quad league area in total  yards allowed (1926)
  • +6 turnover ratio

Rankings

Streaks

  • 2 game winning streak
  • 3 game losing streak vs. Hollister
  • 18 consecutive league title streak in jeopardy

Notes

Both teams badly need this game. A Hollister loss would eliminate any chance for a Baler at-large CCS playoff bid. A Palma loss would land the Chieftains in the CCS D4 playoffs, as they would likely not have the power points to play at the D1 level in the playoffs and defend their back-to-back CCS D1 titles. A Salinas loss to North Salinas, combined with a victory over Hollister, would give Palma a share of the TCAL title.

Monterey (0-9) At Seaside (6-3)

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

Seaside High

Last Year

Monterey dropped its season opener 15-8 to visiting Seaside. Although Monterey jumped to a quick lead after Curtis Freeman burst for a 50 yard touchdown run on the first drive of the season, the Seaside defense stiffened and shut out the Toreador offense for the remainder of the game.

Key Stats

Monterey

  • #23 in the quad-league area in points scored (108)
  • #22  in the quad-league area in points allowed (234)
  • Offense #24 in the quad-league area in total yards (1832 yards)
  • Defense #24 in the quad league area in rushing  yards allowed (2003)
  • -8 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 19 game losing streak
  • 3 game losing streak vs. Seaside

Seaside

  • #16 in the quad-league area in points scored (151)
  • #8 in the quad-league area in points allowed (132)
  • Offense #11 in the quad-league area in total yards (2304 yards)
  • Defense #6 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (1816)
  • +4 turnover ratio

Rankings

  • Ranked #5 in the southern CCS by mbaypreps.com

Streaks

  • 1 game losing streak
  • 3 game winning streak vs. Monterey

Notes

Seaside is ensured at least a share of the MBL title with a victory over Monterey. A loss would likely (assuming Alvarez beats Alisal) drop the Spartans into a tie with Monte Vista Christian for 2nd place (where the Mustangs hold the head-to-head tiebreaker), eliminating any chance for a CCS playoff bid.

North Salinas (5-4) At Salinas (8-1)

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

Salinas High

Last Year

Salinas pummeled cross-town rival North Salinas 46-20. Cowboy running backs Nick Nance and RaChard Williams combined for 145 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. Daniel Orozco chipped in 127 yards rushing, including a 35 yard touchdown scamper in the 4th quarter.

Key Stats

North Salinas

  • #7 in the quad-league area in points scored (193)
  • #14 in the quad-league area in points allowed (187)
  • Offense #5 in the quad-league area in rushing yards (1894 yards)
  • Defense #10 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (2229 yards)
  • -1 turnover ratio

Rankings

  • Ranked #6 in the southern CCS by mbaypreps.com

Streaks

  • 3 game winning streak
  • 1 game losing streak vs. Salinas
  • 7 consecutive 100+ yard rushing games by Ronnie Drummer

Salinas

  • #6 in the quad-league area in points scored (213)
  • #2 in the quad-league area in points allowed (78)
  • Offense #4 in the quad-league area in rushing yards (2089 yards)
  • Defense #1 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (692)
  • Defense #1 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (1261)
  • +1 turnover ratio

Rankings

Streaks

  • 5 game winning streak
  • 1 game winning streak vs. North Salinas
  • 10 consecutive scoreless quarters by defense

Notes

North Salinas needs a victory to claim a share of the TCAL title and ensure a CCS playoff bid. No matter the outcome of this game, Salinas is guaranteed at least a share of the TCAL title and a CCS D1 playoff bid.

Alvarez (5-3-1) At Alisal (4-4-1)

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

Alisal High

Last Year

Alvarez jumped to an early 21-0 3rd quarter lead and never looked back, as the Eagles wrapped up second place in the MBL with a 21-7 victory over Alisal.

Key Stats

Alvarez

  • #8 in the quad-league area in points scored (188)
  • #13 in the quad-league area in points allowed (178)
  • Offense #6 in the quad-league area in rushing yards (1852 yards)
  • Defense #21 in the quad league area in passing yards allowed (954 yards)
  • +5 turnover ratio

Rankings

  • Ranked #4 in the southern CCS by mbaypreps.com

Streaks

  • 1 game winning streak
  • Unbeaten vs. Alisal

Alisal

  • #9 in the quad-league area in points scored (181)
  • #16 in the quad-league area in points allowed (199)
  • Offense #5 in the quad-league area in passing yards (1260 yards)
  • Defense #19 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (1745)
  • -2 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 3 game unbeaten streak (1 tie)
  • Winless vs. Alvarez
  • Alisal has never qualified for the CCS football playoffs

Notes

It is do-or-die for both teams, as the loser of this game will not qualify for the CCS playoffs. An Alisal upset victory over Alvarez would put the Trojans into the CCS playoffs for the first time in school history. An Alvarez victory ensures no less than an MBL co-championship for the Eagles.

Greenfield (2-7) At Soledad (2-7)

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

Soledad High

Last Year

Soledad running back Erik Salto rushed for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 37-6 thumping of host Greenfield. With his effort, Salto became the first 1,000 yard rusher in Soledad school history.

Greenfield

  • #20 in the quad-league area in points scored (124)
  • #19 in the quad-league area in points allowed (212)
  • Offense #8 in the quad-league area in passing yards (984 yards)
  • Defense #20 in the quad league area in passing yards allowed (944 yards)

  • Winless vs. Soledad

Soledad

  • #22 in the quad-league area in points scored (116)
  • #15 in the quad-league area in points allowed (192)
  • Offense #12 in the quad-league area in passing yards (744 yards)
  • Defense #1 in the quad league area in passing yards allowed (416 yards)
  • Defense #23 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (1871 yards)
  • -1 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 4 game losing streak
  • Unbeaten vs. Greenfield

Notes

These new south county schools have developed a healthy rivalry in all sports within a very short time. Throw out the records when school and community bragging rights are on the line.

Gonzales (8-1) At King City (4-5)

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

King City High

Last Year

Trailing 7-6 in the fourth quarter, Gonzales running back Peter Maturino scored on a 63 yard touchdown run with 9:17 remaining, and the host Spartans prevailed 13-7 in their homecoming game. The loss spoiled a fine effort from King City running back Clay Tully, who rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown.

Key Stats

Gonzales

  • #2 in the quad-league area in points scored (340)
  • #5 in the quad-league area in points allowed (94)
  • Offense #3 in the quad-league area in rushing yards (2258 yards)
  • Offense #1 in the quad-league area in total yards (3085 yards)
  • Defense #2 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (706 yards)
  • Defense #3 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (1503 yards)
  • +6 turnover ratio

Rankings

  • Ranked #9 in the southern CCS by mbaypreps.com

Streaks

  • 7 game winning streak
  • 1 game winning vs. King City

King City

  • #12 in the quad-league area in points scored (173)
  • #18 in the quad-league area in points allowed (205)
  • Offense #9 in the quad-league area in rushing yards (1703 yards)
  • Defense #17 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (2484 yards)
  • +1 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 1 game losing streak
  • 1 game losing vs. Gonzales

Notes

Gonzales is already guaranteed at least a share of the MTAL title. A King City win, coupled with a Carmel loss to Pacific Grove, would create a 3-way tie for 2nd place, where league by-laws and tie-breakers would determine which team received the league's 2nd place automatic CCS playoff bid.

Soquel (4-5) At Aptos (7-2)

Game Time:  7:30

Location:

Aptos  High

Last Year

Aptos running back Dan Stevens rushed for 117 yards and two touchdown in 35-7 victory over host Soquel.

Key Stats

Soquel

  • #25 in the quad-league area in points scored (102)
  • #23 in the quad-league area in points allowed (255)
  • Offense #14 in the quad-league area in rushing yards (1470 yards)
  • Defense #24 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (2857 yards)
  • -7 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 2 game winning streak

Aptos

  • #10 in the quad-league area in points scored (176)
  • #3 in the quad-league area in points allowed (87)
  • Offense #8 in the quad-league area in rushing yards (1708 yards)
  • Defense has forced a quad-league area best 29 turnovers.
  • Defense #3 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (892 yards)
  • Defense #5 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (1784 yards)
  • +9 turnover ratio

Rankings

  • Ranked #7 in the southern CCS by mbaypreps.com

Streaks

  • 1 game winning streak

Notes

A victory locks up 2nd place in the SCCAL for the Mariners, and an automatic CCS playoff bid. A victory over Soquel, coupled with a Watsonville upset of San Lorenzo Valley, would give the Mariners a share of the SCCAL title. An Aptos loss, coupled with a Watsonville win, would likely eliminate the Mariners from the postseason.

Saturday's Games

NMC High

Last Year

Teams did not play.

Key Stats

Monte Vista Christian

  • #17 in the quad-league area in points scored (144)
  • #9 in the quad-league area in points allowed (146)
  • Offense #26 in the quad-league area in total yards (1742 yards)
  • Defense #14 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (1485 yards)
  • +7 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 2 game winning streak

North Monterey County

  • #14 in the quad-league area in points scored (170)
  • #11 in the quad-league area in points allowed (167)
  • Offense #10 in the quad-league area in rushing yards (1685 yards)
  • Defense #17 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (1719 yards)
  • -7 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 3 game winless streak (1 tie)

Notes

The Mustangs still have an outside shot at 2nd place in the MBL and a CCS playoff berth. A MVC win, coupled with wins by Alvarez over Alisal and Monterey over Seaside, would put the Mustangs into a tie for 2nd place with Seaside. The Mustangs have the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over Seaside by virtue of last week's 15-0 victory over the Spartans.

Pacific Grove (5-4) At Carmel (7-2)

Game Time:  2:00

Location:

Carmel High

Last Year

For the first time since the late 1970's, the annual regular season ending "Shoe" rivalry game was being played with the MTAL title on the line. At 6-0, Pacific Grove had already assured itself of a co-championship. At 5-1, Carmel needed a win to force a co-championship with the Breakers. With the score knotted 7-7 midway through the 4th quarter, Pacific Grove kicker Brooke Emanuel booted a 48 yard field goal to give the Breakers a 10-7 lead and their first undisputed MTAL football title since 1977. Pacific Grove did not score an offensive touchdown in the game - but a heads-up play by Breaker return man Phil Shin led to six points. Trailing 7-0 with 2:45 remaining in the 1st half, Shin picked up a Carmel punt that had rolled to a stop but had not yet been whistled dead, and raced for a 52 yard score.

Key Stats

Pacific Grove

  • #18 in the quad-league area in points scored (140)
  • #10 in the quad-league area in points allowed (164)
  • Offense #23 in the quad-league area in total yards (1895 yards)
  • Defense #8 in the quad league area in passing yards allowed (694 yards)
  • Defense #7 in the quad league area in total yards allowed (1847 yards)
  • -2 turnover ratio

Streaks

  • 3 game winning streak
  • 8 consecutive scoreless quarters by defense

Carmel

  • #4 in the quad-league area in points scored (271)
  • #6 in the quad-league area in points allowed (103)
  • Offense #4 in the quad-league area in total yards (2809 yards)
  • Offense #3 in the quad-league area in passing yards (1378 yards)
  • Defense #14 in the quad league area in rushing yards allowed (1485 yards)
  • +7 turnover ratio

Rankings

  • Ranked #10 in the southern CCS by mbaypreps.com

Streaks

  • 2 game losing streak

Notes

A victory guarantees Pacific Grove second place in the MTAL, and a CCS playoff berth. Barring a King City upset of Gonzales, a Carmel victory would lock up a CCS playoff berth for the Padres. If Carmel and King City both win, a 3-way tie for second place would exist between Carmel, PG and King City. League by-laws and tie-breakers would determine which team received the league's 2nd place automatic CCS playoff bid.

Santa Cruz (4-5) At Harbor (4-5)
