Salinas
High's Christian Taylor rushed for two touchdowns, and
Thomas Incaviglia threw two touchdown passes in a 27-6
Cowboy victory. Eleven turnovers plagued last years
game, with Monterey surrendering eight. Monterey did not
score until midway through the 4th quarter. |
Notes |
|
Monterey
surrendered 429 rushing yards last week to Hollister,
and things don't get any easier this Friday. Salinas
High is the second-ranked rushing team in the area, and
RaChard Williams is one of the top running backs in the
section. The Toreadors must cut down on the turnovers if
they want to entertain any thoughts of an upset of the Cowboys.
Monterey has turned the ball over 13 times this season. |

Live
Oak's Donnie Murphy rushed for 162 yards in a 17-13 nail-biter
victory over North Salinas. Live Oak trailed North
Salinas 13-10 late in the 4th quarter, but the Acorn's
Tyson Peschke broke off a 22 yard touchdown run with
2:00 remaining in the game to stave off a Viking upset.. |
Notes |
|
It
is only week five, but every game is now a "must
win" game for Live Oak if the Acorns want to
salvage a playoff spot. That will be no easy task
against North Salinas, playing against an unranked CCS
opponent for the first time this season. The North
Salinas defense has shown they can play with anyone, but
16 turnovers this year by the offense has kept the
Vikings out of the win column. |

In one of the most
dominant defensive showings of the year, the Palma
defense limited Alisal to just 17 total yards of offense
in a 48-0 route at Alisal. Four 2nd quarter Palma
touchdowns put the game away early, with 6 different Chieftains
scoring in the game. |
Notes |
|
Alisal's
win over Monterey two weeks ago showed that the Trojans
are a much improved team, but last week's 48-6 blowout
loss to Gilroy also shows that Alisal is not quit ready
to compete with the stronger teams in the MBL. It is the
homecoming game for Palma, and the Chieftains hope to
jumpstart their offense for the alumni after struggling
against a swarming North Salinas defense last week.
Palma brings the area's 4th ranked offense and 5th
ranked defense into the game. The combined records of
the top 5 defenses in the area: 18-1. |

In a 32-12
Hollister victory, the Balers defense limited
highly-touted Gilroy running back Danny Gallo to just 32
yards rushing, holding the Gilroy team to 52 yards
rushing for the game. Hollister quarterback Nick
Buzzetta rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on just
eight carries, and Trenton Young chipped in with 132
yards rushing on 17 carries. |
Notes |
|
This
week's "Prune Bowl" rivalry game is the only
game this week that features two teams with a winning
record. Gilroy will face its first test of the season,
having played league teams thus far with a combined
record of 1-8. Gilroy comes in to the game leading the
area with 166 points scored, 43 more points than the
next closest team. The Mustang offense is also tops in
the area, averaging 399 yards per game. The upcoming 3
game stretch has Gilroy facing Hollister, Palma and
Alvarez, teams with a combined record of 11-1. On the
defensive side, the Mustangs have allowed the fewest
points (40) of any team in the area. Don't feel too
sorry for Hollister - the Baler offense seems to have
finally kicked it into high gear with a 55 point effort
last week against Monterey. |

Pacific Grove
broke open a scoreless game with a pair of touchdowns in
both the 3rd and 4th quarters to earn a 28-0 shutout
victory in Gonzales. Phil Shin scored on a 40 yard
touchdown pass from Jon Grant in the 3rd quarter to put
the game out of reach. |
Notes |
|
This
game could be a shootout - the Gonzales defense has
allowed the most yards in the area (1387) , and Pacific
Grove is not far behind (1304). Gonzales is the worst
team in the area at defending against the pass(556 yards
allowed), the strength of the Breaker offense. Pacific
Grove is the worst team in the area at defending against
the run (1161 yards allowed), the strength of the
Spartan offense. Throw in a pea-soup thick fog at
Breaker stadium and you have a real offensive donnybrook
in the making. |

Riding a three
game preseason win streak, the undefeated Aztecs got a
40-14 rude awakening from Seaside in the league opener
for both teams. A momentum-switching safety on a Soledad
punt late in the 2nd quarter turned a close game into a
blowout. Seaside went on to score four unanswered
touchdowns after the safety to take control of the game.
Brian Holmes rushed for 154 yards and scored two touchdowns
for Seaside. |
Notes |
|
These
two teams were assumed to be going in different
directions. Having lost just about every starter to
graduation, Seaside was supposed to struggle early as
new talent gained valuable game experience. Soledad,
returning just about every starter from last season, was
supposed to challenge for the MTAL title. That has not
been the case, as Soledad limps into its second league
game with a 1-3 record, with every game from now on
having huge playoff ramifications for the Aztecs. With a
ball-hawking defense that has forced 17 turnovers,
Seaside has placed itself in a position to realistically
challenge Pacific Grove and surprising Carmel for the
league title. Strong-armed Soledad quarterback Robert
Magana has attempted only 25 passes for 180 yards this
season. Magana threw for 1267 yards and 9 touchdowns
last season, averaging close to 17 pass attempts per
game. |

Limiting North
County to 71 total yards of offense, the Alvarez defense
put the clamps on North County with a 29-0 shutout
victory. Eleven Alvarez ball carriers punished North
County for 337 rushing yards. |
Notes |
|
Alvarez,
touting the areas top defensive unit with only 711 total
yards surrendered in four games, comes into this game ranked #5 in the CCS by the San Jose
Mercury. This will be North County's third straight
league game against a ranked CCS opponent. The Alvarez
offense has more than gotten the job done this year,
averaging 351 total yards per game. That is close to 100
yards more per game than last season. North County comes
into the game struggling on offense, having scored only
37 points so far this season. The Condors have yet to
score any points in the first quarter, forcing them to
constantly play from behind. |

Chris Bonifas
rushed for 216 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-7 romp
over King City. After trailing 7-6 in the first
quarter, Stevenson rolled off four unanswered
touchdowns, with Bonifas capping off the scoring with a
52 yard scamper in the 3rd quarter. Stevenson's Wes
Connors also ran for 86 yards and a touchdown. |
Notes |
|
Stevenson
could use a few of those Chris Bonifas rushing yards
this season. Through four games the Pirates have rushed
for 377 yards, 769 yards less than last season's
first four game total. Stevenson does lead the area
in passing yardage (585) and attempts (92), but
interceptions have figured prominently in all 3
Stevenson losses. King City may be the most physical
team Stevenson has faced thus far, and the Mustang ground
game is beginning to click. King City running back Clay
Tully is the top ground gainer in the MTAL, having
rushed for 343 yards (4th best in the area). |

Greenfield scored early
and often in a 46-14 steamrolling of Carmel in the
league opener for both teams. Bruin running back Jeff
Fudge ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns on just 9
carries. The win would end up being Greenfield's only
league win of the season. |
Notes |
|
There
may be a little something extra to this game. Leading
Carmel 40-16 with 20 seconds remaining in the game last
year, Greenfield's starting quarterback (still in the
game) threw a 64 yard touchdown pass to run the score up
to 46-16. It was the second long pass play scored by the
Bruins in the final 4 minutes of the game. Carmel,
coming into this game undefeated, may redeem itself with
a little payback if the opportunity presents itself.
Greenfield has been shut out in two of its first three
games |
