Week 6 Notes and Key Stats

  • Playing preseason out-of-section (non-CCS) games is always a bit of a risk come playoff time, because out-of-section league classifications are solely based upon overall record in the CCS playoff power point system. Out-of-section teams are classified as:

    "A" if they have 8 or more wins;
"B" if they have 4 through 7 wins; and
"C" if they have less than 4 wins

Teams receive 1 point for playing "A" opponents, 1/2 point for playing "B" opponents, and 0 points for playing "C" opponents.

Team Opponent Score Record
Harbor Oakland W 18-12 1-5
Watsonville Mission W 63-0 0-6
Scott's Valley St. Anthony W 27-16 2-4
Soquel Kennedy L 22-40 2-3
Carmel Burton W 69-12 0-5
Gonzales Mission W 56-12 0-6
Soledad Notre Dame Riverside W 35-0 0-6
Greenfield Selma L 0-8 4-3
Palma Alhambra W 49-0 2-4
  Paso Robles W 29-28 4-2
Salinas Atascadero W 20-17 3-3

Week 6 By The Numbers

10,000 We may be jumping the gun here into week 7, but next Friday night's Salinas-Palma game at the Sports Complex is expected to draw in excess of 10,000 spectators, which would make it the largest crowd to ever attend a Monterey County high school sporting event.
285 Santa Cruz and Scott's Valley combined for 29 penalties and a whopping 285 penalty yards. Santa Cruz was flagged 16 times for 170 yards, and Scott's Valley 13 times for 115 yards.
256 North Salinas out rushed  Palma 256 yards to 223, the first time since last year's playoff victory over Milpitas that the Chieftains lost the ground battle.
239 Gonzales has scored an area-best 239 points this season, an average of 40 points per game. Through six games last season, the Spartans had scored only 94 points (16 points per game). Gonzales has also surrendered 95 fewer points through six games than last year.
33 The San Lorenzo Valley defense has allowed just 33 points this season:  three rushing touchdowns, a passing touchdown, four extra points, one field goal and one two-point conversion. The Cougars have allowed eight or fewer points in their last five games.
26 Watsonville kicker Eric Tapia has converted 26 extra point attempts (26 of 30).
17 Aptos took home the 33rd annual Black and Blue Bowl trophy with a 21-13 victory over Watsonville. The Mariners now hold a 17-16 edge over the Wildcats in the long-standing Pajaro Unified School District rivalry.
14 14 different rushers went over the 100 yard mark in last weekend's games.
6 After a 3 field-goal effort vs. Greenfield last week, Carmel kicker James Gillette leads the area with 6 field goals, and also leads all area kickers with 38 total points.
2 The Salinas High defense has posted back-to-back shutouts, allowing only 25 yards rushing and 117 total yards in the 2 game span.
0 Carmel continues its streak of allowing 0 first quarter points through 6 games, and the Padres have allowed only 8 points this year in the first half.
