Neither offense
scored a point in a strange 14-2 Hollister victory
over host Live Oak. Lee Osborne returned an
interception 70 yards to put the Balers up 7-0 in the
first quarter. Cameron Shutts returned the second-half
kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. Live Oak's Christian
Lilleland forced a 3rd quarter safety for the Acorn's
lone score.
|
Notes
|
|
Hollister may have found something
last weekend in quarterback Lee Osborne, who will
likely lead the Baler offense for the rest of the
season with the loss of Gordon Ross to a season-ending
injury. The standout senior defensive back and
receiver rushed for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns against
a very respectable Monterey defense. With Osborne
pushing the edges, 2001 All-MBL fullback Trenton Young
had his finest performance of the season, rushing for
232 yards and a touchdown. The hard-luck Acorn's last
two losses have been by a total of 6
points.

Pacific Grove
and Gonzales were knotted at 14-14 to start
the 4th quarter, but the Breakers reeled off 21
unanswered points to pull out a 35-14 victory over the
visiting Spartans. Gonzales running back Ishmael
Gudino rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown, while
Breaker Josh Granstrom had a pair of 10 yard scoring
runs.
|
Notes
|
|
Gonzales
leads all area teams in offense (349 YPG) and
defense (152 YPG). Second in the area in rushing
(1267), the Spartans have also provided balance
through the air. Gonzales quarterback Danny Gonzales
has thrown for 517 yards and eight touchdowns. After
leading the area with 1864 yards passing last
season, the Breakers have thrown for just 135 yards
in five games. |

North Salinas
gave Palma one of its toughest games of the year,
but the Vikings fell 14-7 to the eventual CCS D1
champions. Tied 7-7 four minutes into the 4th
quarter, Palma wideout Kelly Stauffer hauled in a 43
yard Luis Amaral touchdown pass. Palma survived a
last-minute Viking drive to escape with a
victory.
|
Notes
|
|
Palma
(currently #1 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll, #12 in the state by Cal-Hi
Sports) begins its quest for an
ongoing state-record 19th straight league title as
the Chieftains open up TCAL league play against
North Salinas. The junior-dominated Chieftains got a
big boost last week with the return of senior
running back Blake Spiers from a debilitating case
of mononucleosis. North Salinas junior speedster
Ronnie Drummer is any defensive coordinator's
nightmare. The multi-star athlete has accounted for
over half of the Viking's total offensive output.
Palma will also have to account for the very
dangerous North Salinas return tandem of Alex
Cordner and Drummer. The pair have combined for two
kickoff returns for touchdowns, and are extremely
dangerous in the open field. The status of 2001
All-MBL North Salinas receiver Brandon Smith, who
has yet to play a down in 2002, is still unknown. |

Trailing 13-10
with 8 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, Salinas
rallied for two late touchdowns to edge the visiting
Mustangs 23-13. Cowboy running back RaChard Williams
rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown, while Gilroy
running back Matthew Tartt countered with a 112 yard
effort.
|
Notes
|
|
Gilroy
is coming off of a frustrating loss to Alvarez in
which the Mustangs managed only 81 yards of total
offense while committing 5 turnovers. Salinas (currently
#6 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) is coming off of a 35-0
win over Monte Vista Christian in which the Cowboys
lost 6 fumbles. Both teams rank among the worst in the
area at turning the ball over, but the Salinas defense
(#2 in the area, allowing only 166 YPG) has been able
to minimize the damage. Gilroy, on the other hand, is
allowing an area third-worst 320 yards per game. The
Cowboys committed just 22 turnovers last season
in 13 games - they already have 16 in 5 games. |

Santa Cruz's
Jared Hunter had a big day on both sides of the ball
in the Cardinal's 21-13 win over the senior-less
Falcons. Hunter rushed for two touchdowns while also
registering 3 sacks on Scotts Valley quarterback
Andrew Wick. Steve Pinther chewed up 160 yards on 22
carries for the visiting Cardinals.
|
Notes
|
|
Having
started the season out against league heavyweights San
Lorenzo Valley, Watsonville and Aptos, both teams are
looking for their first league win of the 2002 season.
Santa Cruz has surrendered an area-worst 1168 rushing
yards this season, but Scotts Valley ranks second to
last in rushing yards (459) through an extra sixth
game. An interesting match-up to keep an eye on should
be Scotts Valley's top-ranked passing passing offense
(187 YPG) vs. a fourth ranked Cardinal secondary that
is allowing just 70 yards per game. |

Notes
|
|
Soquel
is in the midst of a 10 game losing streak on the
field (the Knights lone victory was a North County
forfeit), and turnovers have been a big part of problem. The
Knights have committed an area-worst 16 turnovers,
directly contributing to a lack of offensive
production: Soquel is averaging 176 yards of offense
per game and just 7 points per game, which ranks
last in the area in both categories. Soledad has its
own problems getting on the scoreboard: the Aztecs
are averaging 12 points per game, tying them with
Pacific Grove for third-worst in the area. |

Watsonville
qualified for the CCS playoffs with a 20-7 victory
over Aptos. Wildcat quarterback Jake Linney scored
on two 1-yard touchdown runs in the 4th quarter to
secure the victory. The Watsonville defense limited
Aptos to 5 first downs and only 100 yards of total
offense.
|
Notes
|
|
With
the addition of the new Tri County Athletic League,
the Central Coast Section is now comprised of twelve
leagues. 32 CCS playoff spots are available: each league
receives two automatic playoff berths, leaving only 8
at-large (down from 10 last year) bids. With San
Lorenzo Valley expected to roll to yet another SCCAL
title, the winner of this game will have the inside
track to 2nd place in the SCCAL and an automatic
playoff bid. The loser will likely be left sweating
out the CCS power point system, which rewards teams
for strength of schedule. Most at-large bids will be
gobbled up by the stronger CCS "A" leagues,
which are comprised of the WCAL, TCAL, DeAnza, PAL and
MHAL. |

Stevenson
quarterback Chris Jackson threw for 218 yards and a
touchdown in a 28-7 victory over King City. Kean
Matthams and David Leach each racked up 90 yards worth
of receptions, with Matthams hauling in a 75 yard
Jackson touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter. Clay Tully
rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown for King
City.
|
Notes
|
|
Stevenson
may be the hard-luck team of the area: the Pirates
lost starting quarterback Rob Goode for the season
with a severe arm injury in Week 1, and lost Jamie
Staples (the area's second leading rusher) to a neck injury
last week. King City is coming off of a frustrating
loss to Soledad in which they dominated statistically,
yet lost on a late Aztec field goal. |

Notes
|
|
It's
out of the frying pan and into the fire for Monte
Vista Christian. The Mustangs got a taste of a
top-notch defense last week in a 35-0 loss to
Salinas. The Cowboys held MVC to negative 15 yards rushing
and only three first downs. Up next: Alvarez (currently
#12 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) and
All-CCS defensive lineman Charles Saguil in the MBL
opener for both clubs. The Eagles are coming off of
a 24-0 shutout of Gilroy in which they limited the
opposition to just 53 total yards of offense. Credit
the scrappy MVC defense for forcing 6 Salinas
fumbles and keeping the score within a touchdown
through 3 quarters - they will need that type of
effort again this week to hang with the surging
Eagles. |

San Lorenzo
Valley capped a perfect 10-0 regular season with a 26-7
victory over Harbor. John Almquist snared two Matt
Sinnott touchdown passes for the Cougars, while also
recovering a fumble and recording a sack on defense.
|
Notes
|
|
Harbor
enters the game with a 3 game wining streak, but San
Lorenzo Valley (currently #4 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll, #5 in the state in D3 by
Cal-Hi Sports) brings a 42 game SCCAL unbeaten
streak to the table. Harbor ranks last in rushing
among area teams, averaging just 60 yards per game.
The San Lorenzo Valley offense may be the most balanced
in the area: the Cougars have rushed for 720 yards
while passing for 763. |

Toby McCleod
exploded for 209 yards and two Padre rushing
touchdowns in a 35-0 victory over Greenfield. Carmel
quarterback Pat Johnston threw for 195 yard and
tossed three touchdown passes to three different Padre
receivers.
|
Notes
|
|
Carmel
(currently #15 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) has yet to trail in a game
this season. The Padres have not allowed a point in
the first quarter, and have only allowed 2 first
half points (safety vs. Seaside) all year. Carmel
has outscored its opponents 115-2 in the first half.
Greenfield ranks second-to-last among area teams in
points allowed (140). |

Five Monterey
turnovers led to a 28-8 season-ending North Monterey
County victory.
|
Notes
|
|
The
slate is wiped clean for both teams with the start
of Monterey Bay League play. North Monterey County
is actually 2-2-1 on the field. After a solid
defensive effort two weeks ago vs. Palma, Monterey
suffered a letdown last week by surrendering 492
total yards to Hollister. Monterey is in the midst
of a 15 game losing streak, the longest in the
Central Coast Section. |

After
starting the season 0-2, Seaside has strung together

3-1 preseason record against TCAL opponents. Alisal
has yet to score in the first quarter, and in both
their victories the Trojans were forced to overcome
early deficits. |
