Gilroy
entered the season with high expectations - two
stellar returning running backs, 2001 CCS postseason
experience and a #10 CCS ranking. A
season opening 48-20 loss to Terra Nova combined
with last week's 34-7 loss the San Lorenzo Valley
has Gilroy reeling. While the Mustang offense is
ranked 4th among area teams, their
defense is ranked dead last in yards surrendered
(1058 total yards in 3 games). It will be a bit of a
homecoming for first year Monte Vista Christian head
coach Jim Work - he served as Gilroy's defensive
coordinator last season. |

Live Oak's
Robert Buenrostro rushed for 3 touchdowns in a 28-0 victory
over North Monterey County. The Acorn defense limited
the Condors to 96 yards of total offense, while
forcing two turnovers. North Monterey County was
flagged 14 times for 129 penalty yards.
|
Notes
|
|
After
starting the season on a 2-0 high, North Monterey
County was forced to forfeit its games due to having
an ineligible player on the roster. North Salinas
added insult to injury last week by handing the
Condors their first loss on the field. After making
the CCS playoff 14 straight years (1985 to 1998)
and taking home 4 CCS titles, the 0-3 Acorns are in
jeopardy of missing the playoffs for the 3rd time in
the last 4 years. Both teams desperately need a
victory to turn their seasons around. |

WON-LOSS RECORD
IN CCS COMPETITION
|
Notes
|
|
St.
Francis (ranked #11 in the S.J. Mercury Coaches
Poll)
rolls into Breaker stadium having suffering a 14-0
loss last week at the hands of De LaSalle -
Concord, the #1 ranked team in the nation. The
Lancer defense held the Spartans to their lowest point
total in the 10 year history of the now-legendary 128
game winning streak. St. Francis is the most decorated
football program in CCS history, having won an
unprecedented twelve CCS Division I football titles
(13 overall) and accumulating an astounding 63-13
postseason record. |

An explosive
first half turned into a defensive struggle; neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in
the second half, resulting in an unsatisfying 17-17
tie for both squads. The tie would cost Alvarez a
share of the MBL title, as the Eagles finished 1/2 game
behind Palma at the end of league play.
|
Notes
|
|
With
Salinas
(currently #2 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) moving to the TCAL, this year's
contest may not have the luster or the hype of
last year, but don't expect a lack of
intensity in this battle of cross-town rivals.
Alvarez, a team that prides itself on playing
hard-hitting defense, will look to redeem themselves
after two lopsided losses to the West Catholic
Athletic League. Salinas must avoid a letdown after
last week's emotional 13-10 win over previously #2-ranked
Mitty. |

Hollister
(currently #15 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) takes the field for the first time in two
weeks after a rare early-season bye. Hollister has scored
5 touchdowns this season, all by five different
Baler players. Last season Hollister scored five
defensive touchdowns - this season the opposition's
defense has returned 2 interceptions for
touchdowns. |

In a defensive
battle, North Salinas ground out a 13-6 victory over
the visiting Eagles. The Vikings were held to 47 yards
rushing on 27 attempts. North Salinas held Alisal on
downs from within their own 10 yard line with just 19 seconds
remaining in the game to hang on for the victory.
|
Notes
|
|
The Vikings
appeared to get on
track with last week's 34-22 win over North Monterey
County. Ronnie Drummer finally had the breakout kind
of game everyone expected this season - 15 carries for
169 yards and 2 touchdowns. Trojan QB Johnny Mariscal
is quietly putting together a solid season; he has
thrown for 370 yards (4th best in area) and 3
touchdowns while also rushing for 87 yards. |

Erik Salto
rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown in a 19-0 victory
over Gonzales. The shutout was Soledad's second
in three weeks. The Spartans committed 5 costly
turnovers.
|
Notes
|
|
Gonzales
running backs Ishmael Gudino and Peter Maturino are
both averaging 100 yards rushing per game, and Soledad
running back Danny Plascencia is averaging 120 yards
rushing per game. Gonzales has the top-ranked rushing
attack in the area, averaging just under 300 yards per
game. |

Watsonville rolled to a 40-0 victory over host
Soquel. Wildcatz quarterback Jake Linney rushed for
two touchdowns and also threw for one score. Running
backs Max McCoy and Shawn Benjamin combined for 176
yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.
|
Notes
|
|
Soquel
is hoping to break an 8 game losing streak on the
field - the Knights lone victory resulted from a
North Monterey County forfeit. Soquel will try and
contain Watsonville running back Shawn Benjamin, who
ran wild in the preseason. Benjamin has already
racked up an area-best 8 rushing touchdowns on just
42 carries, and has scored an area-best 54 points.
Watsonville has completed only one pass - a 33 yard
touchdown strike last week to Johnny Martinez. |

Monterey
battled Palma to a 7-7 tie at halftime, but the
floodgates opened in the second half as the Chieftains
rolled to a 36-15 victory. Brandon Glazebrook and
Nick Noroian rushed for two Palma touchdowns apiece.
|
Notes
|
|
When
you are in the midst of a 13 game losing streak, the
last thing you need is reigning CCS D1 champ Palma
(currently #1 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) up next on your schedule.
The Toreadors had the misfortune of drawing Palma
and Hollister for their mandatory MBL/TCAL 2 game
schedule this season. Monterey running backs Jason
Olsen (35 carries for 237 yards) and Curtis Freeman
(24 carries for 148 yards) are both averaging close
to 6 yards per carry, but the Dores have already
turned the ball over an area-worst 10 times this
season. |

|
Notes
|
|
Playing
with its first-ever senior class, Scotts Valley has
been turning heads around the CCS with a 4-0 start and
impressive offensive output. Lost in the offensive
headlines has been the play of the Falcon defense,
which has forced 10 turnovers so far this season and
produced the first shutout in school history (a
21-0 win over Monterey). Scotts Valley quarterback
Andrew Wick is averaging 3 touchdown passes per game. Aptos, the area's second
stingiest defense (20 points in 3 games), has not
allowed a touchdown pass this season. |

San Lorenzo Valley running back Loren Jensen rushed for
119 yards and a touchdown in a convincing 27-7 win
over the host Santa Cruz Cardinals. The Cougar
defense held Santa Cruz scoreless until Cardinal QB
Paul Croghan scored with 19 seconds remaining in the
game.
|
Notes
|
|
San
Lorenzo Valley
(currently #6 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) enters league play riding a 40 game
Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League unbeaten streak.
The Cougar defense is always among the best in the
section, and this year appears to be business as
usual: in three games the Cougar defense has
surrendered just two rushing touchdowns and a field
goal. Cougar quarterback Mike Crisler had a breakout
game vs. Gilroy, hitting on 7 of 17 passes for 183
yards and 3 touchdowns. Last week's effort put
Crisler at #3 in the area in passing yards. |

Greenfield's
Chris Clayton rushed for 192 yards and 2 touchdowns,
but the Bruins fell

by over 100 yards, but three costly turnovers kept
the visiting Bruins out of the win column.

Notes
|
|
Whether
it be football, baseball, basketball, or even a game
of checkers, anyone familiar with South Monterey
County knows how deep the athletic rivalries run in the Salinas Valley.
Records go out the window when family pride is on
the line. The Mustangs, preseason favorites to
challenge for the MTAL title, have the second fewest
(469) yards from scrimmage in the entire quad-league
area. The Greenfield defense has allowed only 242
yards rushing, tops in the area. |

Forcing seven
turnovers, Stevenson stunned undefeated Carmel with
a 10-9 road victory. Both teams combined for 635 yards
of offense, but nine turnovers stymied scoring
opportunities for both teams.
|
Notes
|
|
The
way Carmel has been rolling, it will take another
7-turnover disaster to keep this game close. Carmel
is among the team leaders in just about every
category, including 3rd in yards from scrimmage
(1068), 2nd in offensive turnovers (3), 1st in
forced turnovers (13), 1st in points scored (140),
and 3rd in points allowed (26). Turnovers have
plagued the Pirates, as they have turned the ball
over 9 times (3rd worst) already this season. |

After
