Week 3 Notes and Key Stats

  • Salinas and Palma knotted two victories apiece in their highly-anticipated games against the rugged Pac-5 and West Catholic leagues. The victories did not come easy, as the margin of victory in the 4 games was a combined 11 points: Palma 29-28 over Paso Robles, Salinas 20-17 over Atascadero, Salinas 13-10 over Mitty, and Palma 20-16 over Serra.
  • With another stellar preseason behind them, San Lorenzo Valley enters league play this week with a 40 game Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League unbeaten streak on the line. The Cougars have not lost a league game since 1995.
  • The Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League is off to a tremendous start, sporting a 17-5 overall preseason record. Six of the Tri-County Athletic League's nine victories have come from undefeated Palma and Salinas; the rest of the league is just 3-8.

  • The Sports Zone male and female Athlete of the Month contest begins this week. A male and female athlete will be nominated from four regions: Salinas, South County, the Peninsula and San Benito County. Monterey Bay Prep Report visitors will be able to vote on-line for their choice. After a one-week voting period, the male and female winner will each receive a $100 gift certificate to the Sports Zone.  Stay tuned! 

 

Week 3 By The Numbers

818 Scotts Valley quarterback Andrew Wick has thrown for 818 yards and 12 touchdowns in 4 games. Even more impressive may be Wick's 65% completion percentage.
64 Carmel has scored 64 first quarter points - only 10 area teams have scored more than 64 points for the entire season.
57 Last season Pacific Grove led all area teams with 1883 passing yards. Through three games the Breakers have managed just 57 yards through the air.  
33 3-0 Watsonville has 33 passing yards this season on just 8 attempts. 
7 7 local teams are undefeated heading into Week 4; four of them hail from the SCCAL: Scotts Valley (4-0), Watsonville(3-0), SLV (3-0) and Aptos (3-0). 
5 Carmel quarterback Pat Johnston threw 5 touchdown passes in the first half of the Padre's 69-12 win over Burton of San Francisco.
4 The Monterey Bay League has managed only 4 wins this season, and the league has an overall record of 4-13-1. Two wins were taken away when North Monterey County was forced to forfeit 2 games for inadvertently having an ineligible player on the roster.
3 Palma defensive back Luke Lippincott has made an interception in all 3 games played so far this season. 
2 The Carmel defense scored 2 defensive touchdowns Saturday: Dylan Roddick and Victor Huddleston both returned fumbles for touchdowns. North Salinas linebacker Carl Nicks also returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown.
0 Salinas and Watsonville have yet to surrender a point in the first quarter this season.
0 We have not received a single stat update from Live Oak. If anyone has access to the detailed statistics from  Live Oak's games with Milpitas, Oak Grove or Seaside, please send them to us. We want to recognize all players and programs.
