overwhelms Kennedy |
Notes
|
|
Kennedy
has been on both sides of a shutout this season: the
Titans opened with a 13-0 victory over Balboa of San
Francisco, but turned around and lost 41-0 to Amador
Valley last week. Titan junior receiver Evyn Roman was
second in the Mission Valley league in receiving yards
last season. Soquel looks to snap its 7 game losing
streak, currently second worst in the quad-league
area. Soquel has been held scoreless in 7 of 8
quarters this season. A bright spot in the Soquel
offense has been the production of receiver Dwight
Lowery, who has hauled in 8 passes for 171 yards.
Lowery is currently
listed at #3 in the
CCS in receiving yards-per-game. |

Notes

The
CCS marquee game of the preseason features the
San Jose Mercury #3 ranked Salinas Cowboys hosting the
#2 ranked Mitty Monarchs at the PIT. Local papers are
reporting standout Salinas quarterback Andy Palacio
will be back in action Friday night after suffering a
shoulder injury in the opener vs. Seaside. The
Monarchs are coming off of a 38-26 shootout victory
over Menlo-Atherton and its Stanford-bound quarterback
T.C. Ostrander. Mitty running back Robert Perry (11
carries/116 yards/2 TD, 72 yard kickoff return for TD
last week) is considered the class of the section, and
is also a huge threat catching balls out of the
backfield and returning kicks. Mitty quarterback Danny
Dressman (9 carries/69 yards/2 TD last week) has
already verbally committed to play baseball at Notre
Dame, while center fielder Perry is considered one of
the top baseball recruits in the nation. Fullback
Rocco Caringello (7 carries/78 yards/1 TD last week)
is also a threat to run the ball up the gut. |

Alisal
will be taking on one of the most decorated football
programs in the CCS. Prior to last year, Oak Grove
had appeared in 4 straight CCS D1 championship
games. The Eagles have won 4 CCS D1 championships,
and are second only to St. Francis with 35 CCS
playoff victories. San
Francisco 49er Andre Carter is an alumni of Oak
Grove, and the Eagles regularly pump out Division 1
college football talent, especially on the defensive
side of the ball. Former Eagle Marcus
Reese is currently a senior starting linebacker
at UCLA, and freshman Jamaal
Jackson plays for Nevada. |

Yerba
Buena of the Blosson Valley - West Valley Division
knocked off Irvington of Fremont 13-12 for their
first victory of the season, matching their entire
win total of last year in the process. Warriors'
running back Elray Herry punished Irvington for 134
yards on 19 carries. The West Valley league is
considered one of the weaker leagues in the CCS
section. |

After
a season-opening 48-20 humbling at the hands of
Terra Nova, Gilroy bounced back last week for a
33-13 victory over Santa Cruz. Entering the game
ranked #6 in the CCS by the San Jose Mercury, and #8
in the state in Division III, the rugged SLV defense
has allowed only 10 points in two games. Gilroy
leads all quad-league teams with 628 yards rushing,
and is 2nd overall with 834 total yards from
scrimmage. The SLV defense ranks 4th in the quad-league
area with just 372 total yards surrendered in two games. |

quarterback Jon Grant rushed for late touchdowns as
the Breakers overcame a 18-14 4th quarter deficit to
top Aptos 28-18. Grant threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns,
and Andrew Engles hauled in 5 receptions for 111
yards and a touchdown.

Off-the-field
incidents had the Breaker offense reeling against
Harbor last week. Emergency quarterback Josh
Granstrom fumbled 11 snaps (recovering all but one),
but redeemed himself by rushing for 107 yards and
two Breaker touchdowns. Aptos has allowed only 13
points, which ties them with Watsonville as the
stingiest team in the quad-league area. The Mariners
have also forced 9 turnovers in two games. |

North Salinas'
Ted Brown rushed for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns in a
17-14 victory over host North Monterey County. With
his team trailing 14-10 late in the 4th quarter,
Brown came through with a 4 yard, 4th and goal
touchdown run to put the Vikings ahead for good.

Notes
|
|
Having
taken on two of the top teams in the CCS (#4 Valley
Christian, #6 S.L.V.), it's time for a break in the
North Salinas schedule, right? Well, not so
fast. The Vikings now host undefeated North Monterey
County. The much-improved Condors are already close
to matching last season's win total of 3. Two of
North Salinas' three touchdowns have come courtesy
of Viking speedster Ronnie Drummer. Drummer returned
a kickoff 87 yards against S.L.V., and he also
ripped off a 65 yards run against Valley Christian
last week. |

Notes

It
is now 12 losses in a row for struggling Monterey, who
in their storied past may not have endured 12 losses in
entire previous decades. With Palma and Hollister
looming on the Toreador horizon, Santa Cruz may be the
best shot Monterey gets at breaking the streak for
quite a while. Monterey has committed an area-worst 8 turnovers.
Santa Cruz, although yielding 500 yards of offense,
played a scrappy game against Gilroy last week. The
Cardinal offense racked up 260 rushing yards, and
backup sophomore quarterback Will Wetmore has yet to
throw an interception while filling in for injured senior
Paul Croghan. |

Four turnovers
and a stingy Catz defense stalled Soledad's offense
most of the night, as the Aztecs fell 19-7 to host
Watsonville. Catz running backs Drew Milczarek and
Shawn Benjamin combined for 121 yards rushing and 2
touchdowns. Watsonville shut out Soledad through 3
quarters, but a 15 yard Robert Magana touchdown pass
with 8:58 remaining in the game finally put the Aztecs
on the board.

Soledad
running back Danny Plascencia exploded for 238 yards
and 2 touchdowns in a 35-0 drubbing of Notre Dame -

differential (points scored vs. points allowed)
through just two games played. Watsonville running
back Shawn Benjamin leads all quad-league players with
42 points scored. |

If
Watsonville's 63-0 route of Mission in Week 1 was any
indication, it could be Gonzales' turn to pad some
stats this Friday night. Watsonville jumped out to a 35-0
first quarter lead, and limited the Bears to just 13
total yards of total offense (-2 yards on the

Palma (currently #1 in the
SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) travels up the peninsula to
take on Junipero
Serra of San Mateo. The Padre's put together one
of the toughest preseason schedules in Northern
California: Skyline (Cal-Hi #5 in the state in D2),
San Leandro (Cal-Hi #10 overall in the state), Aragon
(CCS D2 semifinalist) and Palma (Cal-Hi #14 in the
state, #1 in the CCS). Serra dropped their
opener 32-6 to Skyline, and the following week lost
38-12 to San Leandro. Serra bounced back last week
with a 35-3 trouncing of Aragon. Quarterback Daniel
Bocanegra started his first varsity last week and
promptly threw for 3 touchdown passes, including 2 to
receiver Chris Denny-Brown. |

The
Alvarez defense has the unenviable task of trying to
shut down Riordan's Eric
Wright, one of Northern California's most
sought-after football recruits. Wright rushed for
240 yards on 10 carries and 4 touchdowns in
Riordan's season opening 27-21 victory over Vintage.
In a 35-13 loss to Cardinal Newman last week, Wright
rushed for 136 yards on 32 carries. |

The
Stevenson Pirates partially-righted their listing

Burton
will have to endure a long bus ride down from San
Francisco in order to take on undefeated Carmel. It
could be an even longer ride home, as Burton is
expected to battle Mission for one of the bottom
slots in the San Francisco Academic League. Mission
lost their opener 63-0 to Watsonville, surrendering
35 points in the first quarter. Burton is coming off
a season-opening 40-0 loss to Rodriguez of Fairfield
two weeks ago. Carmel quarterback Pat
Johnston is #3 in the CCS in passing yards per
game according to the San Jose Mercury. |
