Week 2 Notes and Key Stats

  • Last week it was the TCAL vs. the Pac-5; this week it is the TCAL+ taking on the powerful West Catholic League. The San Jose Mercury's #2 (Mitty) and #3 (Salinas) ranked teams collide at the PIT for what is being billed as one of the top CCS games of the year. Saturday, Palma travels up the peninsula to take on Serra, and Alvarez is hosting  Riordan.
  • Carmel kicker James Gillette put several very impressive kickoffs through the back side of the end zone, eliminating the dangerous Seaside special teams as a factor in the game.
  • Many thanks go out to the SLV football coaching staff for their enthusiastic support of this site. Assistant Coach Dave Poetzinger came up with the idea of adding a new Playoff History/Program Info section, now available for every school.  Send us your program history/school records/individual records and we will add them for your school. Thanks go out to Aptos Athletic Director Mark Dorfman for all the recent Mariner updates. Thanks also to Hollister Freelance Sports Editor John Reid for his Baler updates, and also a very special thanks to freelance correspondent Mario Estrada Jr. (MrDrinkMan) for his fine coverage of the Salinas/Atascadero game.

Week 2 By The Numbers

286 Through two games, Carmel running back Chris Brown has compiled 286 rushing yards (3rd best in the area). 12 Monterey now has an area-worst 12 game losing streak. Last season Alisal snapped its 33 game losing streak by beating the Dores.
8 8 local teams are undefeated heading into Week 3; four of them hail from the SCCAL: Scotts Valley (3-0), Watsonville(2-0), SLV (2-0) and Aptos (2-0).
6 Area teams are 6-1 this year in games played against out-of-section (non-CCS) opponents. Out-of-section wins have been registered by Palma (Alhambra, Paso Robles), Scotts Valley (St. Anthony-Maui) , Salinas (Atascadero), Soledad (Notre Dame Riverside) and Watsonville (Mission-San Francisco). 4 Watsonville is un-scored upon in the first three quarters. The Catz have surrendered thirteen 4th quarter points.
3 3 safeties were registered last weekend; 2 of them were scored in the Carmel/Seaside game. All involved punting miscues.
0 Watsonville has 0 yards passing this season on just three attempts. It hasn't hurt the Catz too badly, as they have racked up an area-best 97 points in just two games. Palma has just 30 passing yards , but is second in area-scoring with 78 points. Both teams are undefeated.
0 Palma was called for 0 penalties in their 29-28 win over Paso Robles.
0 We have not received a single stat update from Live Oak. If anyone has access to the detailed statistics from  Live Oak's games with Milpitas or Oak Grove, please send them to us. We want to recognize all players and programs.
