These
two state-ranked programs have combined for 6 section
titles the last four years. Paso Robles, with an
enrollment of 2000 students, had a streak of three
three straight Southern Section division X
championships snapped with a 25-14 semifinal loss to
Santa Monica last season. Palma (currently #1 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) is the two-time
defending CCS D1 champion. In a reorganization similar
to the TCAL, Paso Robles joins the newly formed PAC-5
league featuring SLO-area powers Atascadero, Arroyo
Grande, San Luis Obispo and Righetti. These former
Northern and Los Padres League heavyweights had
previously combined for 8 CIF-SS titles, 11 CIF title
game appearances, and 13 league titles. Highly
recruited two-way All-CIF
lineman Travis Draper recently verbally committed
to USC, and is considered one of the top linemen in
the state. At the Los Angeles Nike Camp, Draper ( 6-4,
260 ) clocked a 4.79 in the 40, a 4.63 shuttle time
and posted a 26 inch vertical leap. Three year
starting Bearcat running back Michael Krouse
registered 1000 yards on the ground last year. All
told , the Bearcats return 6 All-League players from
last season, and 6 defensive starters. Paso Robles opened
the season with a 34-0 win over Santa Ynez. |

The
Cowboys (#3 in the SJ
Mercury Coaches Poll) will have to account for Atascadero's
dangerous running back/receiver Ryan Bugg, who last
week hauled in 4 passes for 102 yards and three
touchdowns, and also rushed for 71 yards and a
touchdown on 12 carries in a 41-0 thrashing
of Cabrillo. Bugg has the luxury of running
behind an outstanding line that features 3 returning
All-leaguers. See Palma note above for more Pac-5

OCEAN DIVISION PREVIEW
|
Notes
|
|
Soquel
and Woodside combined for a 1-18 record last season,
and both took it on the chin in their 2002 season
openers. Woodside lost 40-8 to Hogan of Vallejo,
while Soquel was pounded 49-7 by North Monterey
County. Soquel is looking to snap a 6 game losing
streak, while Woodside is looking to snap an 11 game
skid. Someone will be going happy this
weekend. |

Playoff Game |
|
Two
completely different football games were played
between the two squads last season. In a penalty
plagued (31 penalties/275 penalty yards) league
opener, Alvarez stunned Hollister with a 32-19
first-ever victory over the Balers. Galen
Perry rushed 9 times for 94 yards and a
touchdown, and Eagle quarterback Manuel Miranda
hit on 7 of 9 passes for 123 yards and 2 touchdowns.
In the CCS D2 playoff semi-finals, Hollister
returned the favor with a 34-13 postseason
victory that ended the Eagle's season. Trent
Young rushed for 119 yards a a touchdown, while
the Hollister defense forced 5 Alvarez turnovers and
registered two defensive scores: Cameron
Shutts returned an interception 84 yards for a
TD, and David
Faria returned a fumble 1 yard for a touchdown.
Baler Lee Osborne intercepted two Manuel Miranda
passes as well. |
Notes
|
|
A
match-up of between two of the CCS's top 15 teams. Hollister is
currently ranked #12 in the San
Jose Mercury Coaches Poll, while Alvarez is at
#15. Both teams suffered lopsided losses at the
hands of Valley Christian (#4), the surprise team
thus far of the CCS preseason. If the Balers are
entertaining eventual D1 playoff hopes, this is
practically a must-win game. A loss to Alvarez
would, in all likelihood, require Hollister to win
the TCAL title, which would necessitate running the
table against the likes of #1 Palma and #3 Salinas.
Thus far, Baler opponents appear to be focusing on
shutting down highly-regarded fullback Trenton
Young. With QB Gordon Ross's emergence as a running
threat last week vs. Wilcox (14 carries, 163 yards,
TD), that strategy may now have to be
re-evaluated. |

Both
squads got off to 1-0 starts with two hard fought
victories. Aptos beat Monterey 21-7, and Alisal
took care of Soledad 23-13. The always-physical
Alisal defense limited Soledad to just 104 rushing
yards on 42 attempts (2.5 yard avg.). Aptos running
back Jesse Samples punished Monterey for an
area-best 170 rushing yards last week. Versatile Alisal quarterback Johnny Mariscal is a threat to
pass or run with the ball. |

Watsonville
running back Drew Milczarek rushed for 138 yards and
2 touchdowns in a 27-7 victory over Gonzales. The
Spartans were their own worst enemy with 6 fumbles
(2 lost), an interception, and 8 penalties for
75 yards. Gonzales running back Paul Maturino put
the Spartans on the board with a 26 yard touchdown
run late in the 4th quarter.
|
Notes
|
|
It
was football carnage at Watsonville High as the 'Catz
put a 63-0 shellacking on visiting Mission - San
Francisco. Watsonville rung up 35 points in the first
quarter alone against an undermanned Mission
squad. Catz running back Shawn Benjamin ran wild for
96 yards and 4 touchdowns on only 8 carries. Mission
was held to 11 total yards of offense, -2
yards on the ground. In yet another David vs.
Goliath match-up, Watsonville travels south to
Gonzales to take on a Spartan squad that scored a
25-6 victory over San Jose. Gonzales received
impressive production from a trio of running backs: Ishmael
Gudino and Paul Maturino combined for 213 rushing
yards, and Steven Estrada rushed for 3 touchdowns
and 61 yards on 8 carries. |

Terra
Nova quarterback Greg Reynolds put up some big
numbers against an inexperienced Gilroy secondary.
The senior signal caller hit on 19 of 21 passes for
260 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Mustang secondary will
have to ratchet down the pass defense against a Santa
Cruz offensive unit that stunned
Pacific Grove with 3 touchdown passes last week.
An undersized Santa Cruz defensive unit will
have the unenviable task shutting down the stellar
Mustang rushing tandem of powerful J.L. Mangono and
fleet-footed pass catcher Isaiah Gonzalez.
It was a touch opening week for the starting
quarterbacks for both teams: Gilroy quarterback Ben
Hemeon was knocked out of the game after suffering a
light concussion late in the game vs. Terra Nova, and
Cardinal signal caller Paul Croghan suffered an ankle
injury midway through the PG game. |

Two field
goals from MVC kicker David Clyatt were the
difference in a 13-10 victory over the host
Stevenson Pirates. With Stevenson driving for the
late go-ahead touchdown, MVC's Ben Martinez
intercepted Pirate quarterback Chris Jackson at
the 15 yard line to secure the Mustang victory.
|
Notes
|
|
One
of the most difficult injuries for a team to
overcome is the loss of a starting quarterback.
Stevenson signal caller Jack Britton was lost for
the season after suffering a severe injury to his
elbow in the opener vs. Burlingame. The Pirates, one
of the area's top passing teams last season, will
have to rely upon senior running back Jamie Staples
to carry even more of the offensive load. Staples
and Monte Vista Christian running back David
Leach are among the top 10 rushers in the
quad-league area. Leach put in a solid effort
against a stingy King City defense last weekend,
rushing for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 14-7
MVC victory. |

All-SCCAL
quarterback Matt
Sinnott tossed four touchdown passes in a 28-14
victory over WCAL member St. Ignatius. Waylon
Prather hauled in 3 of Sinnott's scoring tosses
for the Cougars. With the score knotted 14-4 at the
half, the SLV defense clamped down to shut out St.
Ignatius the remainder of the game.

St.
Ignatius of San Francisco is coming off a 35-20 victory over NCS
small school power Marin Catholic. In week 0, the
Wildcats hosted state football heavyweight Buchanon of Clovis,
losing 31-0. The strength of this St. Ignatius squad
appears to be on the defensive side of the ball,
where returning nose guard Conor Coyne and
linebackers
John Flaherty and Steve Harty specialize at shutting down the
run. The Wildcats only posted one win in the rugged WCAL last year, a 21-0
victory late in the year over Serra.

The host
Spartans were humbled 28-3 by Carmel despite a 173
yard rushing effort by Seaside running back Donald
Brooks. Six turnovers hampered the Seaside
offense, including 4 interceptions by quarterback
Keith Garner. Padre DB Jesse
Armstrong returned an interception 23 yards late
in the 4th quarter. Padre sophomore quarterback Pat
Johnston had a hot hand, hitting on 13 of 24 passes
for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns, 2 of which were
hauled in by Carmel receiver Dusty Hare.
|
Notes
|
|
It
looks like the Padres may have found a replacement
for graduated standout running back Toby
McLeod, last season's second leading rusher in
the area with 1233 yards and 15 touchdowns. Chris
Brown rushed for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns in
Carmel's 47-6 victory over Harbor. Carmel can expect
to face a very physical Seaside defense that more
than held their own against explosive Salinas. One thing the Spartans cannot do is let the Padre
receivers run free down the field like they did
against Salinas. Two of Salinas' three scores were
on deep balls where a Cowboy receiver was completely
uncovered or got behind the Spartan secondary. |

The
defending CCS Division IV champion Breakers hope to
overcome a mistake filled 30-22 opening season loss
to Santa Cruz. Two Pacific Grove turnovers
deep in their own territory led to two gift Cardinal
touchdowns. A bright spot for the Breakers was the
effort of running back Josh Granstrom, who rushed
for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns on 9 carries. There
were few bright spots in Harbor's 47-6 humbling by
Carmel. The Pirates were limited to 59 yards
rushing, and only avoided a shutout when Tim Chau (6
catches, 100 yards) hauled in a 6 yard Carlos Hunt
touchdown pass with 0:57 seconds remaining in the
game. |

North
Monterey County amassed 363 yards rushing in a 49-7
trouncing of host Soquel. The Condors averaged over
8 yards per carry, and the 49 points was almost one-third
of last season's total scoring output. Despite
holding Monte Vista Christian to -5 yards passing,
King City lost a hard fought 14-7 decision to MVC.
King City and Monte Vista Christian combined for
just 8 yards passing last week. King City will need
to get All-MTAL
Tight End Isaac Valladarez involved with the
offense; the talented receiver was held without a
catch in week one. |

North
Salinas steps up next to face the buzz saw known as
Valley Christian. The Warriors have previously dismantled Hollister and Alvarez by a combined score
of 87-10. The ball-hawking Valley defense has
already returned three interceptions for touchdowns,
and is allowing just 55 yards rushing per game, and
has allowed only 146 yards of total offense in two
games. Neither Hollister nor Alvarez was able
to make any headway against the defensive front of
Matt Lamb and Jeff Schweiger, and the
talented linebacking trio of Ryan Abbott (MHAL
Defensive Player of the Year), Matt Castelo and
Jeff Ullom. North Salinas has the size and speed to
give Valley a game - but they must avoid the
turnover bug that plagued the 2001 season and the
Viking's opener vs. San Lorenzo Valley. Last season
the Vikings turned the ball over 28 times in 10
games, 4th worst in the area. On Saturday North
Salinas committed 3 more turnovers, including a 4th
quarter SLV interception return icing the Cougar
victory. |

Monterey
hopes to snap an 11 game losing streak. The Dore's
last victory was a 2000 season-ending 22-21
barn-burner over North Monterey County. Scotts
Valley quarterback Andrew Wick, who has thrown for
426 yards and 7 touchdowns in just 2 games, will
face his biggest test of the young season. Monterey
should enjoy a size advantage on the line, so look
for the Dore's to utilize running backs Jason Olsen
Curtis Freeman to chew up yards on the ground. |
