Week 1 Notes and
Key Stats |
- Leading into the season,
the TCAL was regarded as the premier league in the CCS
section. New league members had won back to back CCS D1 and
D2 football titles. It is still very early, but the rest of
the CCS made some very early statements with big wins
over TCAL teams: Valley Christian 38-0 over Hollister,
Milpitas 31-7 over Live Oak, Terra Nova 48-28 over Gilroy,
and SLV 34-17 over North Salinas. Early TCAL
favorites Palma and Salinas, ranked #1 and #3 in the CCS in
the San Jose Mercury Coaches Poll, will have a chance to
garner some statewide respect for the TCAL this weekend with
high-profile out-of-section games. Salinas travels to
Atascadero, while Cal-Hi's #15 Palma Chieftains take on
powerful Paso Robles, ranked #49 in the state entering the
season.
|
- Trivia question: who scored
the first touchdown in Salinas High's newly renovated
stadium? Andy Palacio with his 65 yard 1st quarter scoring
jaunt, right? Nope. Salinas JV defensive lineman Hideo
Muramatsu inaugurated THE PIT by intercepting a
Seaside pass and rumbling 3 yards for the first score on the
new turf.
|
- The SCCAL is off to a quick
start; the league ends week one with 6-2 overall
record. Conversely, the MTAL struggled to a 2-6
record.
