One
of the most intriguing match-ups of the preseason,
featuring the San Jose Mercury #7 ranked Valley
Christian Warriors hosting the #8 ranked Hollister Hay
Balers. Both squads are looking to make a name for
themselves in new leagues. Hollister joins the newly
formed Tri-County Athletic League (TCAL), already
considered one of the top football leagues in Northern
California. Valley Christian moves from the Mount
Hamilton Athletic League into the rugged West Catholic
Athletic League (WCAL). With the competition for CCS
Division I playoff slots becoming ever more fierce, this
early game may have huge ramifications come seeding time
later in the season. Valley Christian is led on defense
by last season's MHAL
Defensive Player of the Year, Ryan Abbott, a 6-3,
220 pound linebacker considered one of the top college
prospects in the WCAL. On offense, Tyler Mariucci (son
of 49er head coach Steve Mariucci) is battling for the
starting quarterback position, and joining him in the
backfield will be junior running back Matt Castelo, last
season's MHAL
Sophomore of the Year.
Hollister counters with a veteran backfield consisting
of All-MBL fullback Trent Young (1200 yards / 12 TD's )
and running back Armando Larez (321 yards/ 5 TD's).
Senior Gordon Ross, who logged one start last season,
will likely take over for 3 year standout Nick Buzzetta
at quarterback for the Balers. |

Notes |
|
Burlingame
inaugurated its $700,000 AstroPlay artificial turf field
with a 5-5 2001 campaign that ended with a 9-7 CCS D4
first round playoff loss to Pacific Grove. The Panthers
return last season's starting backfield tandem of
running back Kevin Farnham (92 yards vs. PG) and
fullback Joe Bernardini (45 yards, 1 TD vs. PG).
Sophomore Drew Shiller replaces graduated three-year
starter Kenny Bowden at the quarterback position. The
Stevenson Pirates look to get the ball into the hands of
versatile back Jamie Staples, who last season rushed for
396 yards and 5 TD's while also hauling in 15 passes for
147 yards. |
