The
Palma defense limited Salinas to 52 yards rushing in a
28-6 victory at the Salinas Sports Complex. Palma
running back Justin Cambier caught two touchdown passes
from Luis Amaral, and Nick Noroian bulled his way for 91
yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. |
Notes |
|
Our
advice to anyone planning to attend this game: get
there early. This South Salinas rivalry game
will be heavily attended, especially considering the
rise in Salinas High's football fortunes this year. With
the possibility of Salinas High snapping Palma's 13-year
Monterey County winning streak, the Cowboy students,
fans and alumni will be out full force Friday
night. But big games are nothing new for the
Chieftains, many of whom played in front of nearly
10,000 spectators in last years CCS D1 championship
game. Few teams are able to run the ball against Palma,
but if Salinas can catch the Chieftain safeties cheating
up on the run with some early pass plays, the Cowboy's
may be able to send their fans home happy. |

The
Monterey defense shut out Alisal 41-0, limiting the
Trojans to 21 total yards of offense. Rodrick
Parker ran for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 5
carries for Monterey. |
Notes |
|
Both
teams come off of good efforts against two of the better
teams in the area. Alisal gave Salinas High all it could
handle, only trailing 13-6 at halftime on a last second
Salinas High interception return. Monterey, despite two
turnovers inside their 35 yard line, went into halftime
tied 7-7 against Palma. The second halves were a
different story, as both teams went on the lose by large
margins. But both teams demonstrated that, with more
consistency, they can play with anyone in the league.
Alisal is a much improved team, and the Trojans surely
look to this match-up as an chance to break their 33
game losing streak. Monterey will have to contain Alisal
quarterback Johnny Mariscal, who ran for 127 yards and
two touchdowns last week against a very good Salinas
High defense. |

After a scoreless
first quarter, David Gibson's 90 yard interception
return for a touchdown highlighted a 21 point Alvarez
second quarter outburst that resulted in a 34-6 Eagle
victory. |
Notes |
|
After
last week's emotional win over Hollister, Alvarez must
be wary of a letdown against North Salinas. The North
Salinas offense, with just 19 yards rushing in two
games, will have an even tougher challenge against the
run-stingy Alvarez defense. North Salinas leads all
teams with 10 turnovers on offense. The North Salinas
defense has played very admirably, keeping games close
despite the offensive turnovers and low productivity.
That Viking defense will face a stiff challenge against
Alvarez's Galen Perry, the area's second leading rusher
with 225 yards and 1 touchdown on just 21 carries. |

Gilroy High |

Gilroy scored
early and often in a 40-14 romp of North Monterey
County. Gilroy's Danny Gallo ran for 148 yards and 3
touchdowns as part of a Gilroy ground game that amassed
313 total rushing yards. Mustang quarterback Jesus Gaona
threw for 108 yards, including a 22 yard strike to
receiver Chris Thomas. |
Notes |
|
Despite
losing starting quarterback Jesus Gaona to a broken
ankle, the Gilroy offense has been impressive. Mustang
running back J.L. Mangono has already gained 221 yards
and 4 touchdowns on just 20 carries. Gaona's replacement
at quarterback, Henry Quistian, has been nothing short
of spectacular, completing 14 of 17 passes for 268 yards
and 3 touchdowns. The North County defense currently
ranks third in the area, having allowed only 414 total
yards, only 87 yards of which have come through the air. |

Hollister won the
game 34-6 on the field, but later in the season had the
game declared an forfeit due to the use of an ineligible
player. Two long Brandon Almaguer touchdown
receptions, and a 4 yard Steven Saucedo touchdown run
jumpstarted Hollister to a 20-0 1st quarter lead. Live
Oak was held scoreless until a late 4th quarter 62 yard
Donnie Murphy scoring run put the Acorns on the board. |
Notes |
|
As
if injuries to the Hollister offensive line and a
demoralizing 32-19 loss to Alvarez last week weren't
enough, the Haybalers must face a physical Live Oak team
without their star quarterback Nick Buzzetta. The
Hollister signal caller was ejected from last Saturday's
game after collecting his second unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty flag. CCS rules state that any player ejected
from a game must sit out the next contest. Untested
Gordon Ross will take over at quarterback for Hollister
against an Acorn defense that posted a shutout last week
against North County. |

King City punished
San Jose Academy 41-12 for the Mustang's first win of the
year. Three interceptions and two forced fumbles by King
City doomed San Jose. In the Mustang win, Delphin
Antonio rushed for 119 yards and one touchdown, and
tight end Isaac
Valadarez scored on a 37 yard pass play. |
Notes |
|
San
Jose Academy continues its tour of the MTAL with its
third preseason contest against south valley opponents.
San Jose edged Gonzales 12-7 in the season opener, then
last week was hammered 41-8 by Greenfield. King City has
yet to score a touchdown, with its lone score coming off
from a Haakan Solberg 30- yard field goal last week
against Morro Bay. King City hopes to contain San Jose
quarterback Raul Sandoval and dangerous All-BVAL
receiver Stephen Contreras; something Greenfield was
able to do in last weeks win, and something Gonzales was
not able to do in their loss two weeks ago. |

Morro Bay cruised

loss. |

|
Morro
Bay, a member of the CIF Southern Section, belongs to
the Los Padres League. Last week the Pirates beat King
City 21-3 behind running back Joe Garcia's 176 yards rushing
and 2 touchdowns. Garcia punished Gonzales for 147
yards and a touchdown in last year's contest. |

Aided by two
interceptions, the Pacific
Grove defense held Aptos off of the scoreboard until 8
seconds remained in the 4th quarter en route to a 20-7
Breaker victory in Pacific Grove. Offense was at a
premium in the contest, as neither squad produced more
than 180 yards. |
Notes |
|
Both
teams come in to this contest with one-dimensional
numbers on offense. Aptos has thus far run for 410
yards, but has managed just 34 passing yards. Pacific
Grove, on the other hand, has managed 279 yards passing,
but just 119 yards on the ground. Numerous injuries have
the Breakers reeling, with two-way starter Trevor
Howell's broken wrist looming large. Look for the bulk
of the offensive attack to fall into the hands of
receiver Phil Shin, who leads the area with 10
receptions and 168 receiving yards. |

Filling in for
starter Anthony Garnett, Seaside backup quarterback
Wayne Ray threw for 246 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 35-7
Spartan victory. Seaside's Tony Curtis hauled in 3
touchdown passes via 6 receptions for 138 yards. |
Notes |
|
MVC
clamped down on the Stevenson ground game last week, limiting
the Pirates to 88 rushing yards on 32 carries. Although MVC went 1-9 on the field
last year, they are 2-0 this season with the return of 16 seniors and a strong set of
juniors that went 9-1 at the JV level last season.
Seaside's first priority on defense will have to be the containment
of dangerous MVC running back
Marcus Hightower. The Seaside offense has managed just
14 passing yards in two games. |

Watsonville
has mowed through its preseason MTAL opponents,
outscoring Greenfield and Gonzales 62-7. Watsonville
running back Drew Milczarek has racked up 313 rushing
yards and 2 touchdowns, and quarterback Jake Linney has
rushed for 100 yards and 5 touchdowns. Soledad, as an
early MTAL title contender, looks to gain some respect
for a league that currently has one team with a record
over .500. Soledad's Erick Salto has jumped out to a
quick start with 194 rushing yards in his first two
games, currently making Salto the #4 ranked ground
gainer in the area. |

In a duel
featuring Stevenson's Chris Bonifas and Harbor's Calvin
Keyser-Allen, two of the top running backs in the
section, it was Stevenson's Wes Connor scoring a 4th
quarter touchdown to edge Harbor 34-28. Keyser-Allen
rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns, while Bonifas
rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown. |
Notes |
|
What
a difference a year makes. Both Harbor and Stevenson
made postseason appearance last season, with both teams
making it to the semifinals of their respective CCS D3
and D4 division playoffs. Decimated by graduation, both
teams are now looking for their first win of the season
after stumbling to 0-2 starts. Tossing last season's
ball control offense, Stevenson quarterbacks lead the
area with 49 pass attempts. |
