The Harbor Pirates held on for a 2-1 victory over the hosts Watsonville Wildcatz in the Watsonville Varsity Girls Soccer Tournament. Junior Olivia Chen opened up the scoring in the 17th min, as Junior Anika Dawson pushed it past the Wildcatz goalkeeper and Chen slid the ball past the last defender. In the 25th min Chen hit a through-ball to Junior Sonja Hulphers who slotted it past the GK to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Wildcatz applied a great deal of pressure on the Pirates in the 2nd half, creating a few good chances. They earned a corner and forced an own goal in the 59th minute. Harbor's defense was anchored by centerbacks Junior Ruby McAlister and Senior Hannah LoFranco; they also got 11 saves from GKs Mia Rodriguez and Amelia Schelhorse. "Watsonville is well coached and always plays physical soccer, it was great for our players to open the season with a well fought win." The Pirates (1-0-0) head back to Watsonville on Wednesday at 3:30 to play Soledad HS, who were victorious vs Cieba HS. |
