Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On February 26, 2014 our SVHS Falcons girls’ varsity soccer team hosted a CCS Division III Playoff 1st round game against the Greenfield Bruins. The Bruins were ranked #10 in the seedings and had a season record of 12 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties. They competed in the Mission Trail League and were ranked #44 in the CCS, #345 in the State & #721 in the Nation through MaxPreps Sports.

The weather conditions was heavy rain and windy. Our Falcons came out with relentless pressure on the Bruins defense. We immediately took the ball down and put a shot on goal then we worked hard for a corner kick in the 2nd minute. Senior captain Darby McFall took the corner and delivered the pass to the front of the Bruins net at the near post. Soph. Brittany Cartee went high in the air and flicked a header into the far right corner of the net for a score. We regrouped and went back to work with our assaulting speed while possessing the ball. In the 4th minute of the game junior Taylor Raymond took a throw-in from the left side and delivered the throw to the feet of Brittany Cartee. Brittany sent a laser shot from approximately 30 yards away on frame. The Bruin goalie blocked the shot and knocked it back into play where soph. Audrey Liebenberg sent the loose ball into the back left of the net for a score. We again went back to work possessing the ball and trying to manage an attack. In the 21st minute Brittany sent a pass to the feet of soph. Allie Carl who took the shot from 30 yards out. The goalkeeper once again blocked the shot and sent it back to the feet of fresh. Serena Garcia who punched the ball into the net for our third score. We played out the first half and ended up with 6 shots on goal. The halftime score was, Falcons 3 to the Bruins 0. The game was then called after halftime because of heavy rains and poor field conditions.

Our defense was once again very strong, aggressive and did not allow the Bruins anywhere near our goal. Our midfielders played fantastic and dominated in the air and on the ground. Our forwards were fast, relentless and made numerous threatening runs on the Bruin defense. Our goalkeeping was played by senior captain Claire Covert and fresh. Alyse Handley. Our forwards were played by soph. Audrey Liebenberg, soph. Samantha Sion, fresh. Kaylee Craft and fresh. Cara Courtney. Our inside midfielders were senior captain Melinda Lane, soph. Brittany Cartee, fresh. Serena Garcia and soph. Mary Lonhart. Our outside midfielders were junior Taylor Raymond, soph. Allie Carl, fresh. Mackenzie Wessell and fresh. Marcella Margiotta. Our outside defenders were sophomores Maddie Hitzeman and Marissa Sion. Our inside midfielders were senior captain Darby McFall and soph. Desiree Rakela. Having strong games in the middle were Audrey, Melinda, Taylor and Allie. Having another stellar performance on defense was Darby, Desi, Marissa and Maddie. Our “Player of the Game” goes to Brittany who dominated the middle of the field and led the charge offensively with 1 goal and 2 assists.

I want to congratulate, praise and express our appreciation to the Bruins players and coaching staff for having a class organization. Kudos to our Falcon veteran upperclassmen and our underclassmen for playing a good game under bad weather and field conditions. Our season record is now 12 wins, 4 losses & 5 ties.

We move into the CCS Division III Quarterfinals against the #2 seeded Live Oak Acorns on Sat. March 1 at a location and time to be announced later. MaxPreps Sports has the Acorns ranked #19 in the CCS, #154 in the State and #333 in the Nation. The Acorns season record is 12 wins, 3 losses & 4 ties. On Dec. 17th, 2013 we played the Acorns in preseason to a 1 to 1 tie. Please support our team in any way you can, go Falcons!
