Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On February 6, 2014 our SVHS Falcons girls’ varsity soccer team hosted the St Francis Sharks on our field. The Sharks had a 2013/14 season record of 2 wins & 10 losses while posting a SCCAL record of 0 wins & 7 losses. The Sharks are currently ranked #8 in the Santa Cruz Sentinel Girls’ Soccer Power Poll for the Monterey Bay Area. We won our first match this year 7 to 0 against the Sharks.

Our lady Falcons started the game with effort and tenacity. It paid off in the 12th minute when junior Taylor Raymond raced down the right wing and sent a perfect cross to the front of the Sharks net. Soph. Audrey Liebenberg went into the air and headed the ball into the goal for our 1st score. Then in the 21st minute senior captain Darby McFall sent in a corner kick where soph. Brittany Cartee pounded the ball into the net. In the 29th minute fresh, Kaylee Craft sent in a pass from the left to soph. Samantha Sion. Sammy took the ball and worked around two defenders and calmly put the ball into the Sharks net from 10 yards out. The first half had our Falcons with 11 shots on goal. The halftime score was, Falcons 3 to the Sharks 0.

We came out the second half with a will to attack the Sharks defense. In the 43rd minute soph. Maddie Hitzeman sent in a pass to senior captain Melinda Lane who made the shot for a score from 30 yards out. We again scored in the 64th minute when Taylor Raymond sent in a pass to the feet of Samantha Sion who passed the ball to Brittany Cartee who immediately scored our 5th goal. In the 71st minute Audrey Liebenberg sent a good pass to Samantha Sion who nailed in our 6th goal past a diving Sharks goalkeeper. In the 77th minute Samantha Sion sent in a shot on the Sharks goal where their goalkeeper made the save but mishandled the ball. The dropped ball was then sent into the net for our 7th goal by Brittany Cartee. Our Falcons had 9 shots on goal the second half. The game ended up, Falcons 7 to the Sharks 0.

Our Falcons defense had another sterling game stopping the Sharks attacks and quickly creating our own counter attacks. Our goalkeeper was senior captain Claire Covert. Our inside defenders were senior captain Darby McFall and soph. Desiree Rakela. Our outside defenders were sophomores Marissa Sion and Maddie Hitzeman. Our entire defense deserves kudos for a well-played game. Our midfielders controlled the ball on the ground and in the air. They won most of the 50/50 balls and played well both offensively and defensively. Our inside midfielders were senior captain Melinda Lane, sophomores Brittany Cartee, Anna Payne and Mary Lonhart. Our outside midfielders were junior Taylor Raymond, freshmen Mackenzie Wessell and Kaylee Craft. Special recognition goes to Melinda and Taylor for playing well the entire game. Our forwards were sophomores Audrey Liebenberg and Samantha Sion. Audrey had an excellent game. Our “Co-Players of the Game” goes to sophomores Brittany Cartee and Samantha Sion. In Samantha’s first game on varsity she scored 2 goals, had 2 assists and 2 shots on goal. Brittany ended the game with 3 goals and 5 shots on goal. Complements goes to both Brittany and Samantha for having a huge impact on this game.

We appreciated the gamesmanship, sportsmanship and effort put forth by the lady Sharks, our Falcons wish you nothing but the best. I would like to state my appreciation to injured players, soph. Emmy Koflanovich, soph. Allie Carl and fresh. Serena Garcia who inspired and cheered their teammates on the entire game. Our season record is now 9 wins, 3 losses & 4 ties. In the SCCAL we are in first place with 6 wins, 0 losses and 2 ties. We currently hold the #1 ranking in the Sentinel Power Poll Rankings. In MaxPreps we are ranked #489 in the Nation, #244 in the State and #31 in the CCS. Our next game will be on Tuesday, February 11, 3:30 PM at Cabrillo College against our arch rival the Santa Cruz Cardinals. We look forward to everyone’s support with our upcoming game.
