Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On January 30, 2014 our SVHS Falcons traveled to play the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars at their stadium in Felton. The Cougars had a 2013/14 season record of 7 wins, 5 losses & 1 tie while posting 2 wins & 4 losses in the SCCAL. SLV fields 7 seniors, 9 juniors, 3 soph. and 1 freshman. They had scored 18 goals and allowed 18. They were ranked #6 in the Santa Cruz Sentinel Power Poll Rankings for the Monterey Bay. In MaxPreps SLV is ranked #1070 in the Nation, #534 in the State and #59 in the CCS. In our first game this year with SLV we pulled off a 3 to 1 win.

Our game started off immediately with our Falcons making several threatening runs on the Cougars goal. In the 6th minute soph. Brittany Cartee sent a pass to soph. Marissa Sion who crossed the ball to the middle of the field. Senior captain Melinda Lane took the pass and sent the ball into the net for our 1st score. In the 10th minute senior captain Darby McFall had a corner kick from the left side and delivered a perfect cross to the middle of the Cougars net. Soph. Anna Payne went high into the air and sent in a header from approximately 15 yards out. In the 17th minute soph. Audrey Liebenberg used her speed to go down the right wing and sent a cross pass to fresh. Serena Garcia who kicked the ball into the net for our 3rd goal. In the 27th minute soph. Mary Lonhart settled the ball in the middle of the field and sent back a pass to the approaching soph. Maddie Hitzeman who hit a perfect shot from approximately 30 yards out for our 4th goal. The first half had our Falcons with 11 shots on goal and the score ended at halftime being Falcons 4 to the Cougars 0.

The second half our Falcons came out with a surge and good ball control. In the 46th minute a shot went into the 18 yard box of the Cougars. Brittany Cartee beat the Cougars goalkeeper to the ball and sent a short pass to Audrey Liebenberg who pounded the ball into the net for our 5th goal. The rest of the game was a hard fought battle with both teams playing to the end. The second half had our Falcons with 7 more shots on goal and the game ended with the score being, Falcons 5 to the Cougars 0.

Our defense once again had a solid performance by all involved. Our senior captain goalkeeper Claire Covert had another solid game. Our inside defenders were senior captain Darby McFall and soph. Desiree Rakela. Our outside defenders were sophomores Maddie Hitzeman and Marissa Sion. Kudos for an outstanding defensive effort by all five of these players. Our midfielders and forwards had a sterling game controlling the middle of the field and making countless threatening runs at the Cougars defense. Our inside midfielders were senior captain Melinda Lane, soph. Brittany Cartee, soph. Anna Payne, fresh. Serena Garcia and soph. Mary Lonhart. Our outside midfielders were junior Taylor Raymond and fresh. Mackenzie Wessell. Our forwards were soph. Audrey Liebenberg and fresh. Kaylee Craft. Special recognition for having an outstanding game goes to Taylor, Melinda, Serena and Brittany. Our “Co-Players of the Game” goes to Anna and Audrey for having an exceptional performance and a huge impact on our win.

We want to thank the Cougars for their hospitality, competition and we appreciate their sportsmanship. Our 2013/14 record now stands at 8 wins, 3 losses & 4 ties and our SCCAL record is 5 wins, 0 losses & 2 ties. We now field 3 seniors, 1 junior, 9 soph. & 4 freshmen. We continue to be ranked #1 in the Sentinel Power Poll Rankings. MaxPreps sports have us ranked #487 in the Nation, #241 in the State and #29 in the CCS. We have scored 29 goals and allowed 18. We have a bye on Tuesday, February 4th. Our next game will be on Thursday, Feb. 6th, 3:30 PM against the St Francis Sharks at our SVHS stadium.
