Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On January 23, 2014 our SVHS Falcons girls’ varsity soccer team hosted the mighty Soquel Knights at our stadium. The Knights had earned a 2013/14 record of 3 wins, 6 losses & 2 ties while posting a record of 1 win, 2 losses & 1 tie in the SCCAL. In MaxPreps Sports they are ranked #1171 in the Nation, #605 in the State and #73 in the CCS. The Knights are ranked #6 in the Santa Cruz Sentinel Power Poll Rankings for the Monterey Bay.

We went into this game knowing we were in for a tough battle with the Knights. Our Falcons were prepared and started an immediate attack upon the kick off. In the 2nd minute of the game junior Taylor Raymond sent a pass into soph. Emmy Koflanovich to the right side of the field. Emmy beat her defender to the right side of the Knights net and drilled the ball into the left side of the net for a quick score. We regrouped and went back to our aggressive attacks. In the 6th minute Taylor raced down the right side lines and sent a pass to the middle of the field where senior captain Melinda Lane sent the ball into the Knights goal for a score from close range. Our defense played solid and offered very little to the Knights attempted attacks. In the 32nd minute Taylor had again used her speed to drive deep into the Knights defense. Taylor passed the ball back to soph. Brittany Cartee who settled the ball and took a shot from 35 yards out. The ball sailed up and over the Knights goalkeepers hands, hit the crossbar, bounced on the ground then spun over the goal line for our 3rd score. In a hard fought battle our Falcons put 7 shots on goal while the Knights put 3 shots on goal in the half. The score at halftime was, Falcons 3 to the Knights 0.

The start of the second half was an all-out battle of trying to control the ball by both teams. The Knights remained strong and determined to stop our scoring. We were able to put 6 shots on goal during the second half but the Knights defense and goalkeeping was up to the task and did not allow a goal. In the 46th minute of the game the Knights kicked a through ball up the field where one of their forwards was in a full sprint. Our defense was in position to stop the play but misfortune hit one of our defenders who fell and missed kicking the ball away. The Knights forward was then on the ball and went one on one with our senior captain goalkeeper Claire Covert. Claire made a valiant effort but the Knights player scored. The Knights had 2 shots on goal the 2nd half and the game ended with the score, Falcons 3 to the Knights 1.

Our Falcons collectively played a very good game. Our defense, midfield and forwards were solid and put in excellent performances. Our goalkeeping was played by senior captain Claire Covert. Our defense was senior captain Darby McFall, soph. Desiree Rakela, soph. Maddie Hitzeman and soph. Marissa Sion. Our inside midfielders were senior captain Melinda Lane, soph. Brittany Cartee, soph. Anna Payne and fresh. Serena Garcia. Our outside midfielders were junior Taylor Raymond, soph. Allie Carl and fresh. Mackenzie Wessell. Our forwards were soph. Emmy Koflanovich, soph. Audrey Liebenberg and soph. Mary Lonhart. Special recognition for an outstanding game goes to Melinda, Brittany, Audrey, Desi, Darby and Marissa. Our “Players of the Game” goes to Maddie and Taylor for having a huge impact on the game with their play and determination.

Our Falcons continue to develop and progress with their play and team chemistry. We grow with each practice and each game. Our 2013/14 record is 7 wins, 3 losses & 3 ties while posting 4 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie in the SCCAL. In MaxPreps we are ranked #27 in the CCS, #220 in the State and #435 in the Nation. We currently hold the #1 spot in the Sentinel Power Poll Rankings for the Monterey Bay. Our next game will be on Tuesday, January 28, 3:30 PM at SVHS against the Harbor Pirates. We look forward to everyone showing up and rooting for our team.
