Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On January 14, 2013 our Scotts Valley High girls’ varsity soccer team traveled to Watsonville to play the St. Francis CCC Sharks on their field. The lady Sharks had put together a season record of 2 wins and 4 losses and had a record of 0 wins and 1 loss in the SCCAL.

Our Falcons started the game quickly when junior Taylor Raymond took a throw-in in the 2nd minute and delivered a perfect pass to the front of the Sharks net. Senior captain Melinda Lane was at the back post when she went high into the air and put a header on the ball and into the back of the net for a quick and decisive score. Our lady Falcons were able to put an additional 8 shots on frame but the Sharks defense and goalie were up to the challenge while keeping the shots out of the net. The Sharks were able to muster 1 shot on goal up to the half. At halftime the score was, Falcons 1 to the Sharks 0.

Our lady Falcons came out after the half and played like warriors. In the 44th minute soph. Audrey Liebenberg made a good pass to soph. Emmy Koflanovich in the middle of the field. Emmy fired a 30 yard shot on goal that flew over the goalies hands and into the net for our 2nd goal at the 44th minute. We continued our assault when Taylor Raymond again took a throw-in and put it to the front of the Sharks net where Melinda Lane again went skyward and headed the pass into the net in the 52nd minute. In the 54th minute Emmy Koflanovich sent in a pass to Melinda Lane who scored from 15 yards away. In the 67th minute soph. Marissa Sion chipped a pass into the middle of the field where Melinda Lane headed it into the net from within 10 yards. In the 75th minute Audrey Liebenberg sent a through pass to Emmy Koflanovich who used her speed to break away one on one with the Sharks goalie. Emmy calmly let the goalie commit herself and she selectively placed the ball into the net for our 6th goal. In the 79th minute fresh. Marcella Margiotta broke down the left wing and sent a pass into the middle of the field where Emmy Koflanovich calmly fired a shot into the net from approximately 30 yards for our 7th goal. The 2nd half ended with our Falcons putting 12 more shots on goal while the Sharks had 1 shot on goal. The game ended with the score being, Falcons 7 to the Sharks 0.

Our goalkeeping was played by senior captain Claire Covert, who had 2 saves during 60 min. of play. Fresh. Alyse Handley had 20 min. of play as our goalkeeper. Our defense played very well and stopped the Sharks time after time on their attempts to make runs and plays. Our defense was led by senior captain Darby McFall, soph. Desiree Rakela, soph. Mary Lonhart, soph. Marissa Sion and soph. Maddie Hitzeman. Kudos goes to Maddie Hitzeman and Marissa Sion for having an excellent game.

Our midfielders had an awesome game controlling the middle, generating attacks and stopping the Sharks attacks. Our inside midfielders were played by senior captain Melinda Lane, soph. Brittany Cartee, fresh. Serena Garcia and junior Emily Todd. Our outside midfielders were played by junior Taylor Raymond, soph. Allie Carl and fresh. Marcella Margiotta. Taylor Raymond had a strong game with her hustle and tenacity while having 2 assists on goals. Our Player of the Game went to Melinda Lane who ended up having 4 goals, 6 shots on frame and was simply all over the field impacting play the entire time. Our Falcon forwards played with speed, distributed the ball and made awesome runs the entire game. Our forwards were sophomores Emmy Koflanovich and Audrey Liebenberg. Emmy had an excellent game scoring 3 goals, 1 assist, 4 shots on goal and was also a very valuable impact player this game.

We are building a team chemistry that is progressing and making us better competitors. Our 2013/14 season record is now 5 wins, 3 losses and 2 ties. Our SCCAL record is now 2 wins and 0 losses. Our next game will be on Thursday, January 16th, 3:30 PM at SVHS in Scotts Valley vs. the Santa Cruz Cardinals.
