Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On December 21, 2013 our Scotts Valley High School Falcons girls varsity soccer team traveled to San Jose to play the Willow Glen Rams at their stadium. We intended to play an all around good game and go into our Christmas break and SCCAL league play with an uplifting and positive feeling about our play and team chemistry.

Our game started with both teams trying to maintain possession and stringing passes together during an attack. Both teams played well and tested each others defenses. Our lady Falcons played with effort, no fear and a trust in each other that has slowly been growing in the team this preseason. The first half had our Falcons with 3 shots on goal while the Rams put 2 shots on goal. The score at the half was 0 to 0.

During the halftime we encouraged our players to keep up the intensity and work with each other generating an offense. The second half saw both teams come out with a focus to possess the ball. The game went back in forth possession wise. At the 72nd minute junior Taylor Raymond took the ball down the left sideline and put a ball into the air in the middle of the field. Senior captain Melinda Lane attacked the ball and sent a 15 yard header up the field. Soph Audrey Liebenberg took the ball out of the air and headed the ball up field another 10 yards for a perfect lead pass to the streaking soph Emmy Koflanovich. Emmy settled the pass to her feet and out ran the Rams defense for a break away. Emmy approached the Ram goalie one on one when she patiently let the goalkeeper make her move. Emmy then drilled the ball into the open left side of the net for a score. After a quick celebration we went back to play. The Rams did not back down and had a relentless attack. Our lady Falcons were under constant pressure but we never gave in. We fought courageously until the end of the game for a 1 to 0 win. The Rams had put 6 more shots on goal while we added another 5 shots on goal.

Our team battled like warriors the entire game. We entered the game with few healthy players. The ladies stepped up to the plate, battled their sicknesses or injuries, played with heart and were determined to play like a Falcon. The girls sucked it up and played hard for each other. We appeared to be trusting each other more and digging deep with superb effort. This is a win that we are very proud of and has lifted our spirits and expectations after a grueling preseason.

Our goalkeeper was senior captain Claire Covert. Clair had 8 shots put on her with maybe 4 of those shots being routine. 3 of the shots she made a nice save and 1 shot had her dive to her right and caught the ball in mid air for a superb save. Claire showed confidence, leadership and her skills.

Our defense was working together more stepping up and covering one another's play. Our defense was senior captain Darby McFall, soph Mary Lonhart, soph Desiree Rakela and soph Marissa Sion. Special kudos goes to the entire defense for having a solid performance.

Our midfielders did an excellent job. Senior captain Melinda Lane, soph Emmy Koflanovich, soph Brittany Cartee and soph Anna Payne played in the middle. They were all solid and played well both defensively and offensively. Our outside midfielders were juniors Taylor Raymond, Emily Todd and freshmen Serena Garcia, Mackenzie Wessell and Marcella Margiotta. Our forward was soph Audrey Liebenberg. They all had a great game making runs and playing tough soccer. Each one of these players put in some excellent minutes of good soccer. Special kudos for playing above and beyond was Melinda Lane, Marissa Sion, Emmy Koflanovich, Brittany Cartee and Anna Payne.

That wraps up our 2013/14 preseason with a record of 3 wins, 3 losses and 2 ties. We are ready and anxious to hit the SCCAL league play. Our first league game will be at the San Lorenzo Valley High Cougars field, Dec 7, 2013, 3:30 PM. Please continue to support our entire team, the effort we are giving and the goals we are trying to achieve.
