Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On December 7, 2013 our Scotts Valley Falcons traveled to Sunnyvale to play the Fremont Firebirds. The Firebirds compete in the SCVAL El Camino League and posted a record in 2012/13 of 11 wins, 6 losses and 2 ties. The Firebirds entered the game with 1 win, 0 losses and 1 tie in 2013/14. The ladies from Fremont had a roster of 7 seniors, 2 juniors and 9 underclassmen.

The start of the game appeared to be disastrous for our lady Falcons. Firebirds soph. Jessica Yu took a pass to her feet within the first minute of the game, worked her way through at least five Falcon defenders and put away a nice shot into the right side of our net for a quick score. Our Falcons quickly rebounded and fought hard while managing to win 50/50 balls and presenting a relentless attack on the opposing teams defense. By the end of the first half the Firebirds had put 3 shots on goal while our Falcons put 7 shots on goal. The half had the score being, Firebirds 1 to our Falcons 0.

At halftime we spoke about picking up our game with more ball control and planned runs to spread the Firebirds defense. Our Falcons came out and dominated the tempo of the game quite a bit. Our Falcons showed improvement with working together and putting pressure on the Firebirds defense. In the 61st minute soph. Brittany Cartee led soph. Emmy Koflanovich with a perfect pass to her feet. Emmy used her skills and speed to break away and dribble the ball uncontested to the Firebirds goal where she cleverly put the ball into the back of the net for our first goal. Our Falcons had a good taste of scoring and continued a barrage of assaults on the opposing teams defense. In the 65th minute sophomore Allie Carl sent a pass to the feet of Brittany within the 18 yard box. Brittany placed a few moves on defenders and calmly sent a rocket shot into the back of the goal. Our Falcons continued their assault when junior Taylor Raymond sent a pass to Emmy around the fifty yard line. Emmy used her strength to power pass her defender who fell and Emmy was left with another break away one on one with their goalkeeper. Emmy approached within 10 yards and put on a move and calmly drilled the ball into the right corner of the net. We continued the game and had to play through the Firebirds attempts to mount an attack and get back some scores. Our team held their ground and shut our opposition down. We had 8 shots on goal the second half while the Firebirds had 5 more shots on goal. The final score was Falcons 3 to the Firebirds 1.

Our goalkeeper was sr. captain Claire Covert who had a very good game blocking 7 shots on goal. Our defensive backfield played well and was led by sr. captain Darby McFall, soph. Desiree Rakela, soph. Marissa Sion, soph. Maddie Hitzeman and soph. Mary Lonhart. Our midfielders played well and were led by sr. captain Melinda Lane, soph. Brittany Cartee, soph. Emmy Koflanovich, soph. Anna Payne, freshman Serena Garcia and jr. Emily Todd. Our outside midfielders played well and were led by soph. Allie Carl, jr. Taylor Raymond, freshman Marcela Margiotta and freshman Mackenzie Wessell. Our forward, soph. Audrey Liebenberg had a good game.

We had a successful game working on both our weaknesses and strengths. Our team is still improving while showing some future promise. We field a team with 3 seniors, 3 juniors and 12 underclassmen. If we continue to put in our work off the field, at practice and in the games we will compete in every game.

Our next opponent will be the Salinas Cowboys on Dec 10th 6PM in Salinas. In 2012/13 they posted a season record of 7 wins, 6 losses and 5 ties. In 2013/14 they have a record of 2 wins and 1 loss. They field 3 seniors, 6 juniors and 13 underclassmen.

Please, continue to support and cheer all our Falcon players as we journey through this years schedule.
