Palma Notes and Quotes
Breaker Stadium, P.G. - The Palma soccer team returned to the pitch at the end of their Christmas vacation with a 4-1 win over Pacific Grove Friday night.

Following an uneventful first half it appeared that P.G. had a productive talk at the intermission when the Breaker’s Rutger Sperry scored in the 41st minute off an assist from Allan Christopher. Christopher made a long cross as Sperry ran into space, gathered the ball, made a move, and finished with low, far post shot. But that would be the Breaker’s lone highlight of the evening.

The Chieftain’s stayed calm and in the 54th minute senior Zack Werner made a long cross of his own to a waiting Michael Levine who earned his first goal of the season when he drilled a near post shot off the keeper’s hands from twenty meters to tie the match at 1-1. That first goal opened the gates for Palma and wheels came off quickly for P.G. when four minutes later Zack Werner made a steal out on the wing and dribbled across the top of the box before scoring his sixth goal of the season with a well placed shot on the near post to put Palma up 2-1.

One minute later the Chieftains were awarded a free kick thirty meters out near the middle of the pitch. J.R. Budde lined it up with instructions from Coach Corner to put it on goal (and not over the goal). Budde did it one better and slipped the ball by the wall and the keeper far post to give Palma a 3-1 cushion.

Miguel Mendez, who led Palma with six shots, wrapped up the scoring when the Chieftains were awarded another free kick, this time at the top of the box. P.G. put four men in the wall, but Mendez made a heads-up play shooting the ball to his left when the keeper opted to stay near post behind the wall.

Palma outshot P.G. 11-4 and had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Breaker’s Emran Baryal took the loss for P.G. with three saves in goal. Palma’s Steven Johnsen had one save in the win.

Fullback J.D. de Lorimier had a good night on defense and used solid footwork on the ball to transition the Chieftains into the offense on several occasions.

Palma wraps up non-league play with a record of 3-2-2 after dropping their first two matches to Stevenson and King City. The Chieftains travel to Monte Vista Christian on Tuesday at 5:45 for the start of league play. The JV play at 4.
