Scotts Valley Notes and Quotes
On January 22nd, 2013 the Scotts Valley Falcons girls varsity soccer team traveled to Watsonville to play the St. Francis C.C. Sharks at their field. The lady Sharks had a good preseason. The Sharks entered the game with an overall season record of 3 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie while posting a record of 0 wins and 5 losses in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL). The Sharks this season have scored 18 goals while giving up 33 goals. Our Falcons entered the game with great anticipation and a focus of playing well on the Sharks small sized field.

The first half began with most of the play being done in the middle of the field. In the 8th minute junior Melinda Lane passed the ball to freshman Emmy Koflanovich who settled the ball to her feet. Emmy spun around and sent a looping shot towards the Sharks goal from approximately 25 yards out. The ball traveled over the Sharks goalkeepers outreached arms and into the back of the net for our first goal. Our Falcons continued to put pressure on the Sharks defense and goalkeeper while putting 9 shots on goal in the first half. The lady Sharks mounted a few attacks on our Falcon defense which resulted in 1 shot on our Falcon goal. The first half ended a tough battle with the score being the Falcons 1 to the Sharks 0.

At half time we spoke with the Falcon players to raise their play, control of the ball and put forth more energy while attacking. The second half started with our Falcons playing more focused and seemingly settling down with the uneven surface of the field. In the 53rd minute senior captain Madison Black was on the attack in front of the Sharks goal when she dropped a pass back to freshman Emmy Koflanovich. Emmy fired a shot from approximately 20 yards out, across the front of the goal box and into the upper left side of the Sharks net for our second goal. We quickly regrouped and continued with our relentless pressure. In the 66th minute our Falcons were on the attack in front of the Sharks goal when freshman Mikaela Inman sent a pass to a charging junior Melinda Lane who fired a shot into the Sharks goal from approximately 7 yards out. The second half had the Falcons with 7 more shots on goal while the Sharks had 0 shots on goal. The game ended with the score being, Falcons 3 to the Sharks 0.

The Falcon goalkeepers were senior captain Emily Johnson (70 Min) and junior Claire Covert (10 Min). Our Falcon defense played solid and were led by junior Darby McFall, junior co captain Megan Keating, freshman Mary Lonhart, freshman Desiree Rakela and freshman Marissa Sion. Our outside midfielders played well and were led by sophomore Taylor Raymond, junior Nicole LaPorte, freshman Allie Carl and freshman Mikaela Inman. Our inside midfielders were active all game and were led by senior captain Madison Black, junior Melinda Lane, freshman Emmy Koflanovich and freshman Marissa Sion. Our forwards were senior captain Jessica DuBridge, freshman Audrey Liebenberg, freshman Emmy Koflanovich, junior Melinda Lane and freshman Mikaela Inman. Having a great game was Madison Black, Emmy Koflanovich and Melinda Lane.

I would like to thank the Sharks team for a good game. Our Falcons 2012-13 season record is now 5 wins, 5 losses and 4 ties. In the SCCAL we finish the leagues first half of play with a record of 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties. The Falcon coaches are pleased with our teams solid win over the lady Sharks. Our underclassmen are making progress with their skills, teamwork and play while slowly learning how to compete at the varsity level. Our upperclassmen are leading the way to establishing a team unity and chemistry that is making us more competitive every game we play. Our players are maturing and developing while working hard and smarter. As a team we're raising our expectations slowly but surely every day. Our next game will be against the Harbor Pirates on January 24th, 3:30 PM at Depot Park in Santa Cruz.
