The rain held off for the duration of the Varsity game, but the field had been completely saturated from the earlier downpours, and JV had done a fine job of turning it into a mud pit. Not quite as bad as the old PG High field or Anzar, but a physically demanding surface to play on all the same. The ball was waterlogged and heavy, and the squishy, slick surface made for an unstable plant foot, resulting in many wide shots. The Cougars were at the Mustangs goal within the first minute, and pretty much stayed there for 99% of the goal. The Mustangs had a few forays into the Cougars half, but our back four thwarted every attack. Gen did not touch the ball once, and was the only player not to be covered in mud by the end of the game. Shots from Daniela, Jackie, Dixie and Kate all failed to find the back of the net until the 25th minute when a shot from Kate was redirected by Blair to beat the Mustangs goalie. Kate had individually worked the ball around most of penalty area, the muddy conditions seemingly keeping the ball stuck to her foot. The pressure continued until the 33rd minute with the ball moving from Blair to Kate, then through and behind the Mustang defense for Blair to give it the final touch past the goalie and into the back of the net. Minutes later, Kate was again in possession, ripping a powerful shot that rebounded off the goalie. An on rushing Sarah was perfectly place to connect with the ball and put it away. The half finished at 3-0. The Cougars continued their assault on the Mustangs goal throughout the second half, with Kate, Daniela and Kendra all having great opportunities denied by difficult conditions and excellent goalkeeping. All and all a very solid performance, with the subs looking more and more confident at the Varsity level of play, and the team looking quite prepared for our opening league game on Friday against Stevenson.
