The Cougars took to the field feeling quite confident today. They were quickly at the Greenfield goal with Sarah have a shot in the first minute. Then Blair in the 5th follow by Kate in the 6th. In the 8th minute, Kate won possession at the half, sent the ball through to Daniela who spun off her mark and raced to goal to score! 1 – 0 Cougars! The next eight minutes saw five more shots from the Cougars, but the back of the net was eluding them. Bruises still lingered from the Stevenson game, and the field was a mixture of bumpy long grass and muddy spots – whatever the excuse, the Cougars were getting frustrated with themselves and not connecting on their usual level. Greenfield had some very talented individual players, but they were unable to put together any dangerous and penetrating possession. The half ended with 13 shots from the Cougars, but only one finding the net! The second half saw Kendra step in for an injured Jackie, and she was soon making her presence felt around the Greenfield goal. Laila was controlling the right back zone, and soon Mika was in as right mid. Possession was improved from the first half, but it took 15 minutes and eight shots until Daniela once again found the back of the net of an excellent cross from Kate deep on the right. The Cougars won a corner in the 67th minute. Kate delivered another fine ball, Blair took a controlling touch and slotted a diagonal left to meet Kendra’s run. Kendra put it away to make it 3 – 0! Other than one long free kick from Greenfield in the 75th minute that Gen easily handled, the Cougars were at the Greenfield goal with a total of 15 shots for the second half. Although a win, the Cougars did not feel it was a performance anywhere near their usual standards. We expect better for tomorrow’s return match. GO COUGARS! |
