The game was being played at the Homestead Christmas Cup tournament at Oak Grove High School in San Jose. The game was played in the Quarterfinals with 8 teams left in the tournament. The game was played under clear skies and dry field conditions. Homestead had one loss and four wins on the year and is a powerhouse in their league.

A hard fought battle by both teams in the first half. Santa Cruz had 7 shots on goal during the first half. The defenders included and was lead by senior captain Trevor Ross (sweeper), freshman Slater Meehan (stopper), freshman Tanner Akol (FB) and senior Vince Cheung (FB). Santa Cruz had 4 shots on goal in the second half. The game ended - Santa Cruz 1 to Homestead 1..

In the ensuing shootout, Homestead won 4-2 and advanced in the tournament.
