The game was played during the Homestead Christmas Cup soccer tournament in the Round of 16 qualifiers. The game was at Oak Grove High in San Jose under clear skies and dry conditions. Leland was undefeated on the year at game time. The game was played by two powerful teams that fought hard and battled the entire game. Santa Cruz scored first in the 16th minute when junior Felipe Camberos scored a goal after an assist from freshman Slater Meehan. The tough match ended at half time with - Santa Cruz 1 to Leland 0. The second half started with allot more action. Leland scored in the 48th minute making the score 1 to 1. Santa Cruz immediately responded by scoring a goal in the 49th minute when senior Gerardo Hernandez scored a goal after an assist from senior Shakaim Redrovan. Santa Cruz again scored another goal in the 71st minute when senior Shakaim Redrovan scored after an assist from senior Gerardo Hernandez. Santa Cruz scored in the 78th minute when Gerardo Hernandez shot a goal after an assist from junior Felipe Camberos. Leland quickly responded with a goal in the 80th minute of the game. The game ended after 82 minutes with the score - Santa Cruz 4 to Leland 2. The Santa Cruz goalkeeper, senior captain Kevin Halasz had an excellent game while having 8 goalie saves. Some of the shots on goal by Leland were kept out of the net by spectacular saves by Halasz. The Santa Cruz offense was also very active and aggressive while controlling the ball and putting 15 shots on the Leland goal. The offense was lead by junior Felipe Camberos, senior Shakaim Redrovan and senior Gerardo Hernandez. Gerardo Hernandez had a very good game scoring 2 goals, with 1 assist and 2 shots on goal. A strong Santa Cruz defense was lead by senior captain Trevor Ross (sweeper), freshman Slater Meehan (FB), freshman Tanner Akol (FB) and junior Diego Pio (stopper). |
