The Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) game was played at Harbor High under cloudy rainy skies and wet rutty field conditions. Harbor High was 6 wins and 1 loss while Santa Cruz was 6 wins and 0 losses in league. The game was for first place in the SCCAL. Santa Cruz was without starters junior Diego Pio (stopper) and junior Felipe Camberos (midfield). The game started with both teams battling the bad field conditions and each other for control of the ball. Santa Cruz scored first in the 14th minute when sophomore Ethan Gomez fired a shot into the goal after an assist from senior Gerardo Hernandez. Harbor then scored in the 24th minute. Harbor had 2 shots on goal the first half while Santa Cruz had 5 shots on goal. The half ended - Santa Cruz 1 to Harbor 1. The second half started with both teams playing hard and aggressive. Santa Cruz again scored when freshman John Chronopoulos had a beautiful goal in the 50th minute after a nice pass and assist from junior Filimon Richardson. Santa Cruz had 5 shots on goal the second half while Harbor had 4 shots on goal. The game ended - Santa Cruz 2 to Harbor 1. Senior captain, goalkeeper Kevin Halasz had 5 goalie saves during the game. The Santa Cruz defense had another strong game preventing shots on their goal and keeping the Harbor attack off balance. The defense had 4 steals and was lead by senior captain Trevor Ross (sweeper), senior Vince Cheung (FB), freshman Slater Meehan (FB) and freshman Tanner Akol (stopper). The Santa Cruz offense was physical and gave a relentless attack on the Harbor defense. The combination of Santa Cruz's skill, speed and teamwork put constant pressure on the Harbor team all game. The forwards were lead by senior Cesar Aguilar and freshman John Chronopoulos. The midfielders included senior Shakaim Redrovan, senior Gerardo Hernandez, junior Filimon Richardson, sophomore Ethan Gomez and freshman Giovanni Giattino. |
