The SCCAL game was played at Scotts Valley High School under clear skies and partially wet field conditions. Santa Cruz had 9 wins and 0 losses in league while Scotts Valley was in second place with 7 wins and 2 losses. The game started with both teams playing tough and trying to build their attacks. Santa Cruz scored in the 7th minute when freshman Tanner Akol sent in a pass to senior Shakaim Redrovan who took the ball to the goal and scored. The first half went back and forth with both teams playing well. Santa Cruz had 4 shots on goal the first half while Scotts Valley had 1 shot on goal. The half ended - Santa Cruz 1 to Scotts Valley 0. The second half started with both defenses slowing down the opposing teams attack. Santa Cruz scored in the 72nd minute when freshman John Chronopoulos fired in a shot after the assist from junior Filimon Richardson. Santa Cruz scored in the 75th minute when senior Cesar Aguilar scored after the assist from senior Shakaim Redrovan. Santa Cruz then scored in the 81st minute when freshman John Chronopoulos shot in a goal after the assist from freshman Giovanni Giattino. Santa Cruz had 5 shots on goal the second half while Scotts Valley had 4 shots on goal. The game ended - Santa Cruz 4 to Scotts Valley 0. The Santa Cruz goalkeeper, senior captain Kevin Halasz had the shutout and 5 saves during the game. The senior goalie played very well while making some athletic saves for his team. The Santa Cruz defense was again stellar in their play and instrumental in stopping the Scotts Valley attack, settling the ball, stretching the field and initiating the offensive counter attack. The defense had 3 steals during the game and was lead by senior captain Trevor Ross (sweeper), junior Diego Pio (stopper), freshman Slater Meehan (FB) and freshman Tanner Akol (FB). The Santa Cruz defense now has 10 shutouts in 18 games. The offense was again relentless with their attack on the oppositions goal. The Santa Cruz pressure put 9 shots on goal and countless other shots at the Scotts Valley goals direction. The forwards were lead by senior Cesar Aguilar (1 goal, 3 shots on goal) and freshman John Chronopoulos (2 goals, 3 shots on goal). The midfielders were lead by senior Shakaim Redrovan (1 goal, 2 shots on goal), senior Gerardo Hernandez, senior Vince Cheung, junior Filimon Richardson, sophomore Ethan Gomez and freshman Giovanni Giattino. Santa Cruz clinches the SCCAL title for the third year in a row and now has an overall record of 14 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie in 2008-09. |
