The Cougars opened their first game of the season against the 2007/2008 TCAL #2 San Benito. We fielded a very young team, with key midfielders Blair Evans (injured),Maddy Morey (injured), April Campos and Jackie Gollette (Cross Country) unable to play. Kate Wright wasted no time in attacking the San Benito goal, including bouncing one off the bar within 10 minutes! Despite the lack of the usual midfield support the Cougars matched the San Benito first half tally of 7 shots on goal, but had to go to the break 2-0 down. The second half saw a similar number of shots on goal from both teams, but San Benito was fortunate to find the net on almost every attempt. The scoreline of 7 – 1 failed to reflect the effort and quality of play that the Cougars put out. Even lacking the midfield strength to match the San Benito team, a more realistic result would have been a final score of 4 – 2. Fatigue combined with new players and positions contributed to several errors and goals that would not have typically been allowed. There was a lot of very good and encouraging play from the new players on the team. As new Varsity players, Sarah Morris, Mary Dignan, Seaira Truppelli, Eliza Harbert, Natalie Simmons, Cristi Bremer, Kathryn Callander, Kellee Taylor and Sophia Yu all made a great and valiant effort to stem the San Benito surge. We can expect a lot of good soccer as the season progresses! |
