Santa Catalina School Notes and Quotes
If we thought it was muddy on the 24th against King City, then this game redefined MUD!

3 to 4 inches of saturated ground permeated the 15 yards stadium side of the field, and by whatever forces govern the universe, the ball seemed inextricably attracted to this area! The ball would stick in the mud and be over-run by both players! Stuck ankle deep in the mud, a simple nudge toppled someone into the sludge! Even in the "dry" area of the field, the surface was slick and a simple change of direction a demonstration of basic physics! Who ever said that athletics had no relation to academics?

The Cougars quickly showed their superior ball skills with Kate having three shots on the Breakers' goal within the first 20 minutes. As expected the Breakers were quick to the ball, and were using the difficult conditions for a threatening "kick and run" game against the Cougars. The Cougars backs and overall team defensive work were up to the challenge, and quickly and repeatedly counter attacked to the Breakers goal.

In the 28th minute the Cougars won their 4th corner kick of the game. Jackie sent in a fine ball to the middle of the 18, Blair had an off balance shot deflected, and Kate pounced upon it to open the scoring. Kate, Blair and Daniela continued the pressure on the Breaker goal for the rest of the first half, but no goals were recorded. There was one ball that beat the Breaker 'keeper, that she turned and pulled back - was it in? The ref was not in a position to call it, but others called it over the line. We will never know for sure!

The second half had the Cougars playing into the setting sun. The Breakers had a few serious attacks, but again the Cougars were able to deny most realistic shots on goal, and quickly counter.

In the 51st minute, Sarah Luksik took possession from a Breakers' attack, sent a long ball to Daniela, who, sensing pressure, laid it off to Blair to drive into the net!

Pacific Grove seemed to fade somewhat after the second goal, but denied all scoring opportunities until the 78th minute when Isabelle relieved the Breaker offense of the ball, and counter attacking, delivered a penetrating ball to Daniela to make it 3-0!

A solidly played game with a few of the usual starters out due to injury or the 'flu. Despite her threatening presence on the Breaker's goal, Kate was rested in the middle of the game because of her 'flu symptoms: She's just so driven to play that she will not admit to needing a rest!

Kaitlin and Isabelle played a superlative game in the central back positions, Laura being ill with the 'flu. Jess in the first half and Vita in the second took over the left midfield from Jackie as she took over April's center mid position.

Dana and Katie both played a significant game in the right back position, gaining valuable Varsity experience.

The PG coach congratulated us on our performance and our superiority in the league, and is looking to us to set the standard of play in both friendly and competitive matches next season.
